Rex was born in Dallas, Texas on February, 26, 1938 to Hattie and Henry Putnam. Rex graduated from Crozier Technical High School in Dallas, where he was an expert marksman on the rifle team and was voted "Most Likely to Succeed" among his classmates. After graduation, Rex served in the United States Army Special Forces at Fort Bliss and attended Texas A&M University. While in school, he met and married Constance Brockles. The couple began a large family including four sons, Rex, Jr., Lex, Jay and Gregg. Rex enjoyed spending countless hours teaching his sons basic engineering and mechanical skills. It was through his enthusiasm for the field that each of his sons chose engineering as a profession. Though he was a science aficionado, Rex found his career as a tugboat captain on the Mississippi River.
Rex is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Rex Putnam, Jr. and Helen Putnam, Lex Putnam Sr. and Clory Putnam, Gregg Putnam, Sr. and Michelle Putnam and their mother, Constance Brockles, McNabb.
