He was the beloved husband of Rosa Cortes for over 49 years; father of Suyapa Caballero-Cortes (Gerson) and Melvin Cortes (Liliana); grandfather of Gerson Caballero Jr., Jessica Caballero, Emily Cortes, Sianna Cortes, and Victoria Cortes; son of Olimpia Urbina and the late Hernan Cortes; brother of Jorge Cortes, Carlos Cortes, Omar Cortes, Ramon Cortes, Mario Cortes, Elsy Cortes, and the late Genaro Cortes. He is also survived by beloved sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was remembered as someone who was very expressive of his love. He loved easily but deeply, constantly giving of himself and his possessions. He was a caregiver his entire life, worrying about his family constantly. He was even more so with his grandchildren, constantly looking for ways to give to them. One regret the family will never have is not knowing how much he loved them and how proud he was of them. He had a deep faith, and was most thankful for his family. He was born in Honduras, and emigrated to the United States at the age of 29. He worked hard to provide for his family, doing a number of different jobs over the years. Before he got sick, he operated his own auto repair business, Cortes Auto Repair in Marrero.
