Dear Family and Friends,
 
It has been one year today, since we said goodbye to Baba.  Thank you all for taking the time to share your special thoughts about this special man with us.  Your continued love and support during the course of the last year has given our family great strength and an undeniable sense of support.  Baba was so lucky to have each one of you in his life and it is clear from your personal reflections that you undoubtedly knew how much he loved you as well.  You have captured Baba's true spirit – from sneaking out of one room, to sneaking in a bottle of scotch to another, “chewing the fat” till dawn, the genuine interest he took in others, his compassion, his sense of humor (often full of mischief), that supportive, non judgmental nature, he who epitomized family, a true sense of community, his big personality – his sheer presence.   Your words speak volumes and now in closure of this special tribute to him, I would like to take this opportunity to share with you a bit about this extraordinary man, my Baba:

As most of you know, we are an extremely close family.  My parents always had a very active social life.  They had something fun to do each and every weekend and it was not unusual for my brother and I to join them.  The best part about the evening was when we all got home, whether we had spent the evening together or not, we all piled into my parents bed and talked and laughed until 2, 3 or even 4 o'clock in the morning.  We listened to old stories and told some new ones, told some good jokes and suffered through some bad ones. All my childhood weekends had a night or two like this.  When I would come home to visit from college we would catch up together in this manner.  Even after I was married I sat on my parents bed hanging out and talking with them, until the early hours of dawn.  We even tried to include Mikaal, but the idea of crawling into bed with my entire family did not appeal to him for some reason?  One night Baba told us the story about how he took Ma to the theatre every weekend in London after they had first married.    My brother and I sat quietly as he launched into what we new would be a story with a beautiful romantic ending.  He said that after the finale of the production, the stagehands would come out and ask the audience to “kindly leave the stage.”  We listened intently to what happened next.  He continued “Now, I am tired and I want to go to bed, so would the two of you please “kindly leave the stage?!”  We laughed and laughed!  From that day on, these four words were our cue to call it a night.

Baba was always there for us.   When my first baby, Aamir Lal, named after his adoring Dadu, was 11 months old I suffered my first devastating miscarriage.  We were living in London at the time and I remember speaking to Baba on the phone and through my tears I told him “Baba, I just feel so alone.”  There was a deafening silence on the other end of the phone.  Then he told me how much he loved me and left it at that.   Early the next morning, my front door bell rang – on my way to answer the door I couldn't help but think who could be calling so early in the morning? When I opened the door, there was Baba. He wrapped his arms around me saying, “You are never alone.”  He didn't have to fly overnight to tell me that – it was something I always knew. He sent me back to bed and went to get the baby up for breakfast.  He told me to get some rest and said he would take care of everything.  I was in such a daze at that time, I couldn't even process how to begin to tell him how to do that – there was so much to do…but he insisted that I not worry and that he would make sure everything was alright.  Granted, he probably fed the baby a beer and a big bag of potato chips, but he kept his word – and as always, he made sure everything was alright.

After a couple of more years of trials and tribulations, my husband and I were blessed with our first daughter, Imaan.  But the good things in life are never easy, I had a difficult delivery and I was hospitalized for 3 weeks, and my daughter for 1 month.  Unfortunately, both of my parents had had back-to-back surgeries in the month preceding Imaan's arrival and were unable to travel to London to be with us during that time.  But we were okay and we assured them we would be fine, never anticipating how difficult the circumstances would be… I remember lying in my hospital bed at the time, looking out the window on that rainy London morning and I heard a voice.  It was Baba! There he was again.  He had flown overnight once again.  “Well I just wanted to see if you needed anything.  Can I get you anything?” as he walked over to my bedside to greet me.

He was a man of his word.  Mikaal and I have lived far away for a long time.  I remember travelling in from Dubai with two young and exhausted children.  In the afternoon they wanted to have ice cream with their Dadu.  I interjected that I didn't think it was really a good time for them to have ice cream and that they really ought to take a nap instead.  Baba said “Ok! ok! We will have ice cream later”.  But they were jet-lagged and slept the entire day. They woke up at 9:45 pm and the first thing they said was “Dadu, can we get our ice cream now?” Without hesitation, he answered, “Yes, of course we can.”  He picked up the phone and called the ice cream parlor, introduced himself and told the manager that he was on his way over with his grandchildren to get some ice cream and although he realized they closed at 10, he would be there before closing time.  He was on his way! He pulled up at 9:58 pm and he bought his grandchildren ice cream – just because he said he would.  (He might have gotten himself some too…pistachio flavor, now his grandson's favorite too)

Baba had an unparalleled thirst for knowledge.  I remember my good friend from The University of Georgia coming into Augusta to take her LSAT (Law School Admissions Test).  She came into town a couple of days before the test so that we could enjoy each other's company and catch up a bit.  Shortly after her arrival to our home, Baba said, “Now let me see what you're working on there” – he always had an incredible interest in learning.  They sat together at the dining table looking through the books that she had brought along.  After some time, we called it a day and went out to visit with friends, came home, went to bed.  The next morning, we discovered that Baba had taken one of the practice examinations.  My girlfriend graded that test and to our astonishment – Baba had scored a perfect score! It was beyond impressive – it was amazing.  She said “Well, Mr. B. looks like I need to spend some more time with you!” And there he sat over the next couple of days, at our dining room table, helping her.  After her exam was complete, she came through the door, filled with anxiety “I just don't know how I did”.  He put his arm around my friend and said, “You did your best, that's how you did – you did all you could do. Now, go upstairs and get ready – tonight I am going to introduce you to Garba!” And off we went to dance the night away…

My father was always one-step ahead of me.  I remember in high school we had a firm rule in our home that we could not take phone calls past 10 pm at night. Of course, I liked to talk to Mikaal just a little bit longer (and later), so we devised a brilliant system, in which if he wanted to speak with me after 10 pm in the evening, he would call our house, allow the phone to ring one time and then hang up – signaling me to call him back.  We were so clever.  I would obviously know it was Mikaal, but anyone else who might answer would most certainly think it was a wrong number or something and not pay much attention to it.  Then the coast would be clear for me to run upstairs and return his call, talking with him hours into the night.  One night my father sent me to get something from the car.  I came back inside and was walking around the kitchen when he said, “I'm going to bed.”  I said goodnight to him and just as he was leaving the room, he announced quite confidently, by the way, “Mikaal called about 10 minutes ago.  I assume he would like for you to call him back now.”  Stunned, for once in my life I didn't have anything to say.  He promptly burst out laughing (I guess the look on my face must have been quite amusing) and giggled all the way to bed!

Baba was a funny and fun loving person.  In our community, it is our custom to invite artists, singers, dancers and other performers from abroad to our homes to stay with us as they go on their American tours.  We believe that inviting people into our home is the best way to host a person, by treating them as family.  My parents had done this many times for many people throughout my childhood.  I remember one very special time that my parents had invited the renowned artist, Suchitra Sen, to stay with us in anticipation of a concert performance in Houston.  Like my parents, many of their friends were HUGE fans of hers.  Understanding this fact, my parents thought it would be a terrific idea to have their closest friends over for a small dinner party in her honor.  They explained that she had not been well, and it was an impromptu visit – she would perform on the weekend at an already planned event as a special guest if she felt well enough to do so, but she could not guarantee anything, so she wanted to keep the news of her arrival quiet.  She would however like to meet just a few people in the community.  Their friends were thrilled to have been selected to be part of such a special group!  They arrived that evening dressed in their most special saris and expensive suits, wearing jewelry normally brought out for only the most auspicious occasions.  My mother had prepared an elaborate meal and my father had bought the best champagne.  Their friends could hardly contain their excitement – but Mrs. Sen had not been well enough to come and join the dinner party.  My parents explained once again that she had not been well, but that they would go upstairs and check on her to see if she felt well enough to come down just to say a quick hello to their guests.  After some time, my mother began descending down the stairs with a frail Mrs. Sen, whom in customary fashion had her sari pulled over her face like a veil.  Ma helped her to the bottom of the steps where all the guests rushed to greet her, hands grasped firmly together in front of their chests as a sign of respect.  She paused as you might expect an elderly lady, who had not been feeling well, to do.  Then suddenly in a tremendous fervor, she RIPPED the veil off of her head – and there was my father standing there in a sari jumping up and down shouting “April Fools!! April Fools!!”  I will never forget the sight of my father in a sari that night, or the looks on his friends' faces…

He was a creative man.  He had a first cousin in India, Panku Kaku, who was just 21 days younger than him.  They were raised like twins and were the best of friends.  Every time we went to India, my father and my uncle would dine at the finest restaurants on short notice, sometimes no notice at all.  Extremely curious as to how the two of them always managed to get a table – when others often waited for months, I finally asked him how they pulled this off.  He chuckled and said, “We have our ways.”  I insisted that they take me with them the next time.  They obliged and that very evening we were dining at a restaurant that I had wanted to visit for some time.  Although I had been unsuccessful in securing a table there, they had no problem at all.  They did not wait in line and went straight to the front. They were ushered in by the most senior staff member and promptly seated at a VIP table.   I was amazed, confused and highly suspicious all at the same time. All the key people in the restaurant, including the Head Chef himself, approached the table, introduced themselves and personally welcomed us to their restaurant.  We enjoyed a wonderful meal and in addition to the delicious things that we had ordered, they served us numerous “special” items created just for us to try.   It was one of the most memorable meals of my life.  As we left, I persisted that they tell me their secret.  It turns out that FOR YEARS the two of them had been running around Kolkata telling people that Baba was a world famous food critic from abroad!  They never asked the restaurants whether they had availability to accommodate the two of them – telling them instead that the famous food critic had availability for the restaurant.  It had gotten to the point that people in the industry were actually recognizing him!

My father was a patient man.  The morning after Mikaal and I were married, we visited with my parents and their friends at our home.  After a lovely morning, as we were leaving, my father proceeded to walk down the driveway as we backed the car out.  Not unusual as he always did this - walked down the driveway following his children, smiling and waving goodbye until he could walk no further.  On this day however, he was making all sorts of motions with his arms up in the air, much like an air traffic controller.  He seemed to be directing Mikaal, who was driving.  My new husband looked at me, “What is he doing?!” I nodded my head and shrugged my shoulders – I had no idea.  Finally, Mikaal rolled down the window and as Baba approached he said,  “Hey Baba, I've been doing this for 10 years! I know what I'm doing! I can back out of this driveway.”  Baba leaned in, put a kind hand on Mikaal's shoulder, smiled and said, “Son, while it is true you have been doing this for 10 years, in that 10 years, you have also been running right over my sprinkler system at the end of the driveway.  Now that you have married my daughter, I would like for you to learn how to correctly back out of my driveway.”  About 5 years after that, he had the sprinkler moved.

So many people came and visited our home following my father's death and we appreciate it so very much.  Thanksgiving Day 2010 was my last full day with my father.  I overheard someone saying in conversation “This is so sad.  Thanksgiving will always be such a sad day for this family.”  In the instant I heard it, I disagreed with it because I knew that wasn't the case.  For me it will always be one of the most special of days, for it will be the day that I will cherish the time that I had with him and a day for which I will forever be thankful.  My husband always teases me “ I am just your husband! Your dad is your soul mate!”  He truly was my soul mate. 
 
Baba liked to make his own decisions.  In fact, the only reason President Bush claimed to be “the Decider” was because he hadn't met my father.  In the days immediately following his death, I grieved for my father and the fact that this was a decision that was taken away from him.  It might have been the first time a decision was actually made for him.  But when I was able to take a step back and look at the situation objectively, I felt differently.  Baba was an engineer, a graduate of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (back in the day “when there was only one IIT, and it was actually difficult to get into” he would joke).   He was an analytical man.  A man of numbers, he liked to be precise.  Baba left this Earth after 67 years of life and he was sick and in the hospital for exactly 67 days – so I know and take comfort in the fact that he took part in this decision as well. 
 
My heart is still broken from the loss of my father.  But he always told us in life “Don't worry about me.  I had a great life.  And it was great because you were a part of it.”  He told us every day that he loved us.  I have no regrets, none, about my relationship with my father.  There were no unspoken words between us.  He knew how much I loved him, how much I cared for, admired and respected him.  And I know this isn't a goodbye, but rather a see you later, as I know that I will see my father again one day.  Although my heart is still trying to heal, it is with your love and support that it will mend again some day. 
 
It is now time for me to “kindly leave the stage”, one last time for Baba.

On November 26, Earth lost a great man and Heaven gained a new angel. When Ranjit's wife Chhanda asked me to say a few words at his service I thought of a thousand things that I  could say about him. I could have outlined his numerous professional and technical accomplishments. However, I recognized that this would only embarrass him.  He would feel uncomfortable, smile shyly and say, “Come on, Abdulla”.  He displayed greatness that you only see in a man who possesses self-confidence and inner peace. He was a 10 foot giant because of these unique attributes.
So bear with me as I speak to Ranjit and have you listen on.
Ranjit, we thank you for sharing your warmth, friendship and family with us.
Thank you for sharing the products of your excellent parenting skills in the form of Tati and Rangana. 
In the countless times that doctors and nurses entered your Hospital room over the last two months, they consistently felt your quiet dignity and enormous strength. Neither the machines in the room, nor your severe illness could mask that. We had never ever experienced anything like that before and probably will never ever encounter it again. 
You are very special. Thank you for sharing your brief life with us.
I speak to you in the belief that you are no longer a mortal being but an immortal soul that will forever live in the heart of your wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, friends and the countless nurses and doctors who participated in your care. You have touched and meaningfully molded our lives. For that we all thank you.
Rest in peace and feel confident that the Abdulla family will do everything it can to be there for your family. Thank you my great friend. Thank you!

Your sense of humor and sheer intelligence radiated through your eyes and your marvelously toothy grin.  Walking through the door and being greeted by you was always like coming home. Ranjit Kaku,
I find myself awake at four in the morning trying to think of words to say to describe the sense of loss I felt when you left us a year ago.  I called you Kaku, but really you were more than that, closer even than most of my uncles in India. You have been a constant presence in my life since I was born.  I think I took that for granted that you would always be there at the important events in my life, cheering me on like you always do.  I will miss you at those important events, but I miss even more the casual times, those nights staying up to two or three in the morning just “chewing the fat” as Tatum would say, discussing everything under the sun, laughing so hard sometimes that our stomachs hurt.  I thank you for the laughter, the wise advice, the shared stories, the encouragement, and, most of all, the example of courage and living life on your own terms.  I have been blessed to have you in my life.

As a youth I always felt welcome in your home. In Mr. Bandyopadhyay's friendly, fatherly presence I grew to cherish your family; his infectious warmth - which each of you continue to carry forward -  will never be forgotten. More than anything I remember laughter whenever the Bandyopadhyay and Mukherjee families visited and I was lucky enough to take part. No effort was spared to make me feel comfortable and wanted. I thank you all for the time you've shared with me. I will be forever grateful for the tiny nuggets of wisdom Mr. Bandyopadhyay passed on to me in the smallest moments. I thank all of you for accepting me as a part of your community and your extended family. 

I have love in my heart for every member of the Bandyopadhyay family and hope that peace prevails in your hearts. You all mean so much to me.

Ranjit was a very talented engineer but also had many other interests and sides to his personality. I really got to know him well when we co-chaired an event in 1997. It was the first time India was selected to be the featured country in the Arts in the Heart of Augusta festival.  It was such a tremendous task to manage two stages to show case our culture, the food booth and the miniature village scene which we created inside a tent under the guidance of Partha Mukherjee. Ranjit singlehandedly arranged for guest artistes to perform Odissi dances at the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre. Both of us went through some harrowing times, growing pains as well as mishaps but pulled it off with much help from our community. Ranjit was a great guide and allowed me to make decisions with my instincts. Even when he disagreed with me at times, he never stopped supporting me or being my friend. Over the years, Arts in the Heart has grown to be a big event and festival and so has the Indian Pavilion. We have become a “must see and experience” item for the decoration, food, Mehendi and prizes we have won. I miss him especially when the first Dosa is made as he was always ready to “taste test” it for us!! I also miss him when a particularly good artiste comes to perform at the Temple as he was a great supporter of the Arts, especially Hindustani music.  I will always carry these wonderful memories with me.

As November 26 approached, we remember Ranjit da, with sorrow, but also with much fondness at what he had meant to all of us who were privileged to have known him : his life touched us in ways that have enriched our own. 
On the anniversary of his passing, Baby and I would like you to know that while all our words cannot mend your heartache, we deeply care and share your, and Guddy’s and Tatum's loss. Your mental strength through all the travails has been exemplary. May we humbly wish that you continue to find this strength in yourself, and a measure of comfort and peace of mind, in the love and the warm embrace of your children, your family, and your many, many friends.

Ranjitda was a sweet and loving person. I knew Ranjitda for nearly 20 years. An astute professional engineer, Ranjitda was also very fond of sports such as Soccer and Football. We watched the SuperBowl and World Cup Soccer final together in 2010.

Ranjitda was also extremely sharp in recognizing stars of old Hindi movies. He could name stars that others would never recognize.

Ranjitda left for heavenly abode in very untimely and shocking manner. We still have trouble gripping with that loss and vacuum.
God rest Ranjitda's Heart and Soul with peace and tranquility!

In this life you have fulfilled everything that a man possibly could have done. May be there were nothing else for you to do and may be that is why you had to leave this earth so soon,

Next week is the Thanksgiving week. It's about a year that Ranjit left us. Chanda lost her husband, Guddi and Tatum lost their dad and I lost my brother -- a brother I didn't have.

A star has fallen from the sky. There is a void on the sky. And there will be voids in our hearts forever.

I remember those moments we spent together. Those moments were most enjoyable in my life. I remember hillarious moments -- both of us wearing dhuti at Guddi's wedding, sending sweets in the rental car in spite of resentment from your niece's husband, sumggling a bottle of scotch through the back door of Westin during the NABC event in San Jose in California. Your presence was always lively and entetaining even your comments on Banerjees and Chakravortis.

Life goes on. I wish I know "where are you now". You came to the world and made the world a better place through your charisma, passion,and persuasion -- a temple in your community, professional contributions to the nuclear industry, being there whenever anyone needed you, loving care to your family, uncle and mesho to the children in your community. We miss you. We will miss you forever.

Chhandadi, It has been a year since Ranjitda has passed away, but his memory remains in our minds as fresh as ever.We still remember his coming to our house and laughing, joking and chatting away with us for hours.I had always been a great admirer of Ranjitda.He will remain in our hearts forever.

It has been almost a year and even now Ranjit uncle is in our hearts and minds. He has always been such a positive force. I remember initially from the time I went to Bengali gatherings he was one of the “Jethu/Kaku's” who would be present.  In Augusta, when my mom got involved with the temple, he was always a familiar and welcoming figure when I used to accompany her to the meetings at the two temples.  It was later when I started college that I felt I got to really know Ranjit uncle.  The main thing I learned from him was to enjoy all aspects of life.  There is one particular occasion that really inspired me. I remember one evening at a Bengali party some of the uncles were talking about their jobs at SRS and Ranjit uncle was the only one that was excited about solving the engineering problems involved. In fact, he did not look forward to the day he would have to retire and said that he would miss solving the math equations.  I always felt like he encouraged me, and everyone else, to enjoy life while working hard.  Ranjit uncle will always be in my heart and I will always cherish the good memories that I have had with him.

Ranjitda – As I knew him

   It is almost a year now that Ranjitda is not with us, and we miss him dearly.

 I first met Ranjitda and Chhandadi in1990, when Baren and I moved to Augusta from Ft. Worth, TX.  Ranjitda cordially invited us to his house and made us feel right at home in this new town.  It seems like just the other day…he instantly became an elder brother, and a dear friend. He had such a unique and special personality, and the charismatic aura in him made him admirable to all.

 As a friend he was warm and caring, witty and humorous too. Of the many endearing memories I have of Ranjitda, which stands out the most is, when we met him at Dr. Bhallas' surprise Birthday party. He talked with me and Nina for hours, reminiscing incidents from the past, all the while joking in his own inimitable way. His sense of humor kept the conversation flowing for hours without even realizing it. Little did I know that this was the last time I would see Ranjitda and Chhandadi together, happy and carefree.

 Ranjitda no longer being with us, still seems unreal. I would like to remember him as I saw him last, always impassioned, jovial and charming. I admired his zest for life, and the way he lived every day to the fullest. All the memories Baren and I shared with him will forever be cherished and remembered. Ranjitda will forever live in our hearts.  May Godgive him peace and give Chhandadi and family strength to bear this loss.

To you Ranjitda— it makes me sad that no more will I see a jovial, cheerful person with abundant love, like you. This is a great loss for us, but I know you are amongst us…smiling. Let us not grieve, but rather, let us celebrate the life that you led, all the lives that you touched in so many ways, and all the ways you made a difference.

Just when we remember you,
It is hard to believe that you are no longer with us.  Early morning starts with a car pool; the front seat is always yours.  You are the leader.  Sometimes you are silent enjoying the morning or sometimes discussing politics.     
I always see you as an energetic highly skilled professional with a brilliant way to look at the things.  Any problem, you are there to solve it.  I can still see that you are drawing a plan for your next three months.  You have so many agenda on your plan, one of which is going to India.  I remember one of your exciting days, since morning you are busy, I asked what happened, you are busy in the morning, relax!  You told me I have no time; I have so much to do.  Do you know my son is coming?  I shall have to spend time with him; forget office I shall give company to my son.  You are always proud of your son and daughter, nephews and nieces. 
Your presence can be felt even when you are silent.  You are the star attraction of the party and keep everybody laughing and laughing with your humor.  
I always felt that you are different, you stand alone without comparison.  You had a mind that can see the real pleasures of life; you can go beyond the boundaries and find joy in the stressful life.  
 Life is always going forward.  In that forward motion we ran side by side for a short while.  And at the end you took a big step forward, a big jump silently and suddenly.  And we felt a big emptiness, a vacuum in our mind with a big question why you have to go so early?  In our eternal passage of life nothing is lost, we all will live and continue to pay tribute to the beautiful things though in a different space, different time and different shape but within the same envelope.
Your memory shall always sparkle in our thinking, in our discussion with friends and you will live forever with us.

We first met Ranjit in 1982 when he came to work with Westinghouse, in Pittsburgh. While Chanda, Guddi and Tatum were still in Houston, TX, Ranjit came to our house over the weekends, often watching football, base ball and other games. We use to enjoy hanging out together.
At the time we met , I was new in the engineering field, Ranjit became my mentor at work as he was technically sound and knew quite well, different aspect of the engineering. 
Eventually, both of us moved with family to Augusta where our friendship flourished over the years. He was always a phone call away and ready to listen.
We will always remember Ranjit for his warm and pleasant personality, and will miss him.

It has been a year since Ranjit passed away and yet his voice and his warm smile remain fresh in our memory and will do so for a long, long time.
Ranjit knew no strangers. Strangers to him were only friends he had not met. He had the same welcoming open embrace for all, high and not so high, young and not so young. How he approached people and made them feel comfortable are tales for the legends.
His self-confidence, although occasionally misplaced, was contagious. He would brush off things unnerving to the mere mortal. To him, everything would be ok in the end. 
He could easily have become a lawyer. He could make bizarre theories look logical and plausible. It is only when he showed his sly smile that we knew he was pulling our leg.
He could have easily become a successful salesman. The way he “sold” the constitution to the temple members, he could sell ice to the Eskimo. 
But he chose to become one of the leading engineers in the world in his field. And we basked in his glory.
Family was supremely important to Ranjit. He once dropped everything and rushed off to see Guddy in UK when he did not hear from her for a few days. He stayed involved with Tatum and guided him through his career. He made sure Chhanda was always well provided for. 
As our scriptures say, emulate the great and you will become happy too. We will certainly try to emulate Ranjit and follow his lead. We may become happier too.

No words can fill the void in my heart due to jethu's demise. Memories scan at a rapid speed whenever I think of jethu but to share them means to give away with him which I am reluctant to do at any cost... 
Jethu is still alive in my heart and will remain to do so till the end.. 
He was, is and will remain an epitome of selfless love, care and fun loving man.

"Jethu, resembled my dad's face". I still remember those phone calls when he used to say “Rup!” How r you?” On the very day Jethu passed away and the news reached our ears, I just looked at my dad's face. His eyes were red-shot. Yet , he didn't cry even if he wanted to cause he didn't want us to break. I do understand the fact that missing one's brother is more painful than missing an uncle. I kept myself at my dad's position for that moment and I felt how helpless he was. That very feeling made me very upset and I literally cried the whole night. 

Yes, it is true that the place of a brother or an uncle will not be filled by anyone else. Jethu is, and will be remembered by me as a source of inspiration and a pillar of strength.

It is almost a year since my dear friend Ranjit passed away. He has left a big void, but we also have very fond memories of him. I have known Ranjit for over fifty years .We met on the first day at IIT, and developed a very close friendship from the very beginning. We worked together first in the study group, later at work in Calcutta, then in England. I still remember June 9, 1967, the day we left Calcutta together for London. We had a stopover in Rome for two days. We had only three pounds between us in our wallet, but that did not stop us from seeing Rome. We saw most of the City on foot. 

I was fortunate to be at Ranjit and Chhanda's wedding in London. Then they had their daughter Guddy and son Tatum. In 1977 Ranjit moved to Houston.  These are fond memories of the happy days we had together. 

Everybody admires Ranjit for his splendid personality and kindness, treating people- young and old with respect and honor, in a friendly manner and win their confidence. He had a unique talent to find the goodness in people, and appreciate it. 

I have admired Ranjit for his intelligence. He did everything so effortlessly and always performed better than others. He was a ranked student in school and colleges, both in IIT and Leeds University. He became Chartered Engineer in England, both in Civil Engineering (MICE) and Structural Engineering (MIStruct.E) at an early age. At work, he was the best; with a superior ability to comprehend a problem and come up with the right engineering solution. 

Ranjit was a very caring person, always looking for the best for his family and friends. Last time we met in Los Angeles about three years ago, he was a very happy grandfather. We saw the photos of Guddy and her family with Ranjit. When I commented that he was spoiling the kids, his immediate response was that he has made a deal with Guddy, she can bring up the kids properly and he can spoil them at his leisure.   This was his privilege. That was Ranjit- a fine dad and a loving grand-dad. He was enjoying life to the fullest. 

Ranjit left us at a young age of 67. He accomplished so many good things in life. I miss him, but I know he has moved to a better place. I pray for him, and wish his family well. 



I have heard several stories from my father in my childhood about Uncle (Ranju Jethu). My father used to tell me various incidents regarding the bondings that he shared with his cousins whenever we had discussed about the values of living in a joint family. In every occasion Baba used to take Uncle's name with great respect and admiration. Baba considered him not only as his cousin but just like his elder brother. Uncle excelled not only in studies but also he was a very good human being.

Since he was living abroad I got a chance to meet him more or less 6 times or so
as he used to arrange a family get together every time he was back in his motherland. He used to put in great effort in organizing the party and inviting all his relatives over phone or in person.


I could recall the fact that he mailed me the snaps which he had taken in the Get together Party so that the precious moments can be recapitulated by all of us, which I later managed to forward to my other cousins who were also present at the occasion.

I can still remember the last 2 conversations we had through mail. First regarding sending my sister's marriage snaps which he highly appreciated and in reply wished her good luck as well. We continued our conversation as he asked me when I would become a full fledged Advocate and whether I was planning to do Masters or not?


Finally the last conversation was about Aunt's illness and he was very upset.

After that the string of conversation was somehow broken. I was engrossed in my job and frequent tours. But I was getting all the updates about him and his family members from my father, sister and  Hazra Dida as they all were in constant touch with him.


Finally, I got the shocking news over the phone from my father, on 27
November 2010 about his demise. It was really hard for me to believe that our loving jovial Uncle is no more.


 To quote Albert Einstein -
"Our death is not an end if we can live on in our children and the younger generation. For they are us, our bodies are only wilted leaves on the tree of life."

Uncle will always be remembered by all as an excellent human being with lots of love, affection and with great respect. Sometimes it is hard to accept reality but life has to roll on.

We have to cherish his memory that abides with us, more potent, may, more present than any other living man.

It is almost a year now, Ranjit is no more with us; yet he is so alive in our memory. Before my marriage, I did not know him, not even heard of him. After my marriage all I knew that Ranjit is a close friend of my husband. While coming to USA, I had an overnight stopover in London. I had been strongly advised by my travel agent not to stay anywhere else but in the hotel assigned by the airline. While coming out of the airport, suddenly I heard - Is not it Anjana? I did not even look but instantly said to my airline escort that I will go with him and off I went with Ranjit and Chhanda. That was my very first introduction to them. They made me feel so at home, I would never forget that. It is an embarrassing yet fond memory. Now it is over 40 years we know each other.

I am sure wherever he is now, sitting cross-legged, he is entertaining others with his unparalleled humor.

I could not take the I.Sc. Final examination due to measles. Next year, when I repeated the courses, I did not know anybody in my class. So I sat in the last bench. There, frequently, I saw another student seated next to me near the door. After the roll call, he would ask me to cover for him as he sneaked out of the classroom. In time, we began to converse occasionally. 

When I joined the engineering program at Kharagpur, I met Ranjit once again as we were assigned the same residence halls. Over the next four years our friendship really grew.

After finishing college, we both worked for about two years, in different companies, in Kolkata. Then I came to London for graduate studies. In about two weeks, Ranjit also came to London on a work visa. It was not planned that way; it just happened. My cousin, with whom I was staying, arranged for Ranjit a room in a house nearby. So, often, Ranjit would come to our apartment after work, spend the evening, and have dinner with us.

Ranjit arrived in London in the afternoon and the very next morning my cousin took him to the unemployment office. The people there were surprised to find someone claiming an unemployment check less than 24 hours after one’s arrival. However, they paid him one pound as he was technically unemployed. We promptly went to the movies and spent the money.

Several years after I came to USA, Ranjit also came here and settled first in Houston and later, in Augusta. We kept in touch as our children were born and grew up.

It has been a wonderful journey with Ranjit as a friend.

We were cousins, but he was like my own brother.I can remember all the naughty kiddish things that we used to do at that time: putting a fireant on our grandpa's bald head while he was teaching us, we smiled loudly and ran away from the room.Every time Ranju went to Kolkata, never forgot to visit his dear "didi" and we had a great time together. It’s still hard for me to accept the fact that my beloved Boro Pisha is not with us anymore. We still have vivid memories of Pishi and Pisha during their last visit to LA two years back and the wonderful time we had.
He encouraged me and guided me during my early days in USA. I can still remember that I used to call him for advice when I was in doubt and he always guided me the right way. I used to call Pishi during the afternoons and usually Boro Pisha picked up the phone since Pishi never missed her afternoon nap. Pisha and I used to chat about a lot of stuff during those phone calls. I will always miss him. His voice still rings inside me and I will never hear “Kire kemon achis” (how are you) which he used to say every time he picked up the phone.

It was a very pleasant surprise.

Many thanks for your efforts.  Ranjit was a good man -- quiet, competent, with a surprising and sly sense of humor.  I shall miss him.  The funeral home's web site has no provision for on-line tributes, and a call to them confirmed that situation.  Please give my regards to his family.

That Ranjitda has left this earth of ours seems almost unreal. Yet I know that Ranjitda has left us for “that undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler returns”. After three decades of discussing Hamlet’s soliloquies, the finality of losing a respected and dear friend suddenly clicked in my mind as I skimmed Shakespeare’s play. No one was as full of positive energy as Ranjitda. I first met Ranjitda and Chhandadi in 1991 and came to admire their immense ability to empathize with friends as well as their sensitivity to the needs of others. They came to the aid of anyone they realized was alone and suffering. In the summer of 2010, I was visiting Augusta, and my daughter and I spent a lovely afternoon with Ranjitda and Chhandadi. Seemingly healthy and fit, Ranjitda’s sense of humor kept the conversation flowing. Little did I know that this was the last time that I would see both of my friends together, relaxed and care free. To have known Ranjitda was to have understood the meaning of the phrase “a man for all seasons”. Ranjitda lives on in the hearts of those who respected and admired him.

I want to register a few words to recall my memories about Ranjitda, our beloved respected brother-in-law (Jamaibabu) who has left us for heaven last year on 26th Nov 2010.
He was a nice, gentle, religious, sensible, humorous and highly qualified person for which we are still proud about him. I have fond memories of our visit to Atlanta during 2007 during which Ranjitda took leave from office to give us company. We had some wonderful time at his place accompanied by adda and great food with him and didi (my elder sister and his wife).
He loved and enjoyed authentic Bengali food, specially chhoto maach  like pabda, tangra etc. My wife (Jolly) fondly remembers those days when on his visits to Kolkata he used to come to our place and his favorite dishes used to be a constant fixture during meal time. He was also very appreciative of her cooking. 
We can’t forget him and he will be in our heart and memory forever, though we will miss him around us. His absence will created a void that will never be fulfilled.

It is very hard to believe that Ranjit is gone from this world.  Everyone whoever knew him is really shook up to see his untimely departure.

It is very hard for me to forget a special friend, Ranjit.  Our first contact goes back to 1986 when I moved from Rockford to Augusta at Plant Vogtle.  I was in his group and we started working together.  He had the best sentence about morning, if somebody came and asked a question of him first thing in the morning, he used to say ‘don't talk to me before my 1st cup of coffee.’  Another good one was, if someone came and asked him as they often did, 'when will the project be done,' he would remind them: ‘No wine will be served till it is ready.’  After Plant Vogtle, we were at SRS in the same group, and I would hear the same responses, and we both would laugh knowingly at that.  We carpooled together from 1987 to 2010, and after that he moved to SRR, where he was recognized as a Fellow Engineer, which is a rare level of achievement.  His best quote was :  'men who've crossed the river don't need boat.'  Ranjit had a special sense of humor.

Ranjit - That I knew

I first met Ranjit in spring of 1985 when we moved from Pittsburgh, PA to Plant Vogle, on an assignment with Westinghouse. I was a newcomer to the V-SAMU supervisory team at the plant and Ranjit was already an established group leader there. He was well respected both by the management and the staff for his high professionalism and integrity. What struck me most though was his iconic status of invincibility amongst his colleagues. In nuclear industry traceable documentation is ‘Job 1’ and companies spend a lot of time and effort in doing it right. Engineers are strictly required to document authentic sources (e.g., engineering handbooks, drawings etc.) of all design inputs and assumptions. On one occasion an engineer apparently after spending several futile days in search of an acceptable source document finally cited Ranjit’s extension number as the reference, counting on his reputation and persuasive power to carry the day for him. [It didn’t work but Ranjit helped him find an acceptable source and saved the poor guy’s job].  

Ranjit was an avid but (self proclaimed) rational risk taker. A few of us planned family trips to Hilton Head on a long weekend. Ranjit, true to his relaxed style, was late in leaving home and had his own plan to catch up with the rest of us. He mapped a shorter rural routing and drove at highway speed through it all and in no time got a ticket for speeding. Unruffled by this unwelcome but not so un-anticipated episode he continued his fast driving along these less traveled roads and was soon rewarded with the second speeding ticket. The undaunted gambler, never heeding to the screaming of the passengers (wife and children) collected one more travel gift from highway petrol before reaching the destination way late. With the family members fuming and all others incredulous Ranjit was however un-apologetic and with a smiling face made a heroic effort to convince everyone of the fine rationale and absolute logic of his behavior. According to his expert scientific interpretation of driving statistics, the event [3 speeding tickets to the same driver in the same road, on the same day] was and should still be construed as ‘incredible’ and be written off as such without wasting any further valuable vacation time. It worked with the friendly holiday crowd then but to the best of my knowledge he had to pay the full fine in spite of its classification as a case of statistical aberration.  

Ranjit was a well-studied, diligent scholar of the eastern tradition and an effective, organized go–getter of the American style at the same time. He complied the comprehensive By-Laws of the Augusta HTS almost single handedly from scratch- a testament to his broad expertise, deep dedication, strong perseverance and high efficacy as a community leader. To put this in perspective- while Ranjit published the by-laws in little over a year’s time, the successive Board of Trustees of HTS are still struggling to put together and deliver a few amendments to it identified years ago.

Ranjit was a gifted intellectual with a high level of confidence, always true to his conviction and ready to engage with any challenger, friend or foe in an uninhibited, spirited defense of his principles, values and heritage (linguistic, cultural, spiritual, political, you name it).  As is the case with men of strong personalities this was the virtue that earned him high respect and admiration.

Finally, Ranjit is the first among our long time friends and contemporaries to leave us so early. His untimely departure brought us face-to-face in an intense personal way, the rudest fact and thought of life- our own vulnerability and ultimate destiny. 
Our Thanks to the Almighty and his agent, our beloved friend for pointing to us this eternal Truth and thus helping us plan for and make the best use of our remaining time on this fascinating yet, illusive world.

Ranjit was known especially for his patience and perseverance in addition to professional excellence.

I still can’t believe that Ranjitda is no longer with us. He was so full of life – a man loved and respected by all. I just don’t know where to start - I have so many fond memories of him. My very first road trip in the US was with him and Tatum and he taught me what ‘sunny-side up’ eggs are!!! By relationship definitions and guidelines, he was Anup’s and my brother-in-law - but in reality, he was our friend. To my parents, he was more like a son than a son-in-law. I have asked myself several times as to what led to his sudden passing away – medical science may put forward a lot of justifications, but all I know is that I have lost a very dear friend too soon and it hurts a lot. Ranjitda, you will always live in our memories and there can never be a family gathering without remembering you. We all love you and we all miss you.

Dear Chhanda, Rangana, and Arijit,

I’d like to take a few minutes of your time to reflect upon how much Ranjit was loved by and how much he has done for the HTS community of Augusta. I have had the pleasure of working closely with the highly musically erudite Ranjit on the cultural committee of HTS and hence have had the first-hand experience of seeing him in action.  He was endowed with the instinct and the knowledge of choosing the best among the touring classical musicians every year and also with the uncanny ability to negotiate the most affordable fees that would fit our budget.  Every time Ranjit proposed the names of such big shots, I would ask him, “it would be great to have that artist in our little town, but Ranjit, how are we going to pay the fee they are asking for?” to which he would respond with his characteristic confidence, “Dharma, don’t worry! We will raise money somehow and make it happen.”  And he never let us down, even if it meant putting money from his own pocket!  I have seldom seen such generosity. It is because of Ranjit’s tireless efforts combined with help from other dedicated HTS members, we have had the privilege of listening to great musicians such as Rajan and Sajan Mishra, Ahmad Sultan Khan, Buddhaditya Mukherjee, Amjad Ali Khan, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, and others.  It remains a fact that every one of these concerts was a great success.  There is one program that merits particular mention for which Ranjit and Kakoli Basu put their heart and soul into: It was a dance program by Mr. Sukalyan Bhattacharjee and party of Toronto I had organized at Augusta State University for the Lyceum series. It was Ranjit who persuaded me to consider Sukalyan’s group for this series and I remain eternally grateful to Ranjit for doing so, for the program was a resounding success. It was unfortunate however that Ranjit could not attend the program, despite all the efforts he had put into making it happen, because of a family emergency.

Ranjit and I have exchanged CDs and cassettes of many Hindustani classical concerts and have been benefited mutually by each other’s collection, but I wish I had interacted with him more and gained some of his musical knowledge……. I will always cherish the memories of my association with him. 

Ranjit’s loss has undoubtedly had its impact on the HTS community of Augusta.  He has not only contributed significantly to the cultural committee of the HTS but has also dedicated his time and efforts as the president and chairman of the HTS. He is being greatly missed. 

Shankar and I convey our heartfelt condolences to the three of you for this irreparable loss and pray that the Lord gives you the strength to move forward.

Let us say at the onset that it has been difficult for us to erase the tragedy of Ranjit da’s sudden and unexpected passing from our hearts and minds: such is the power of life over death ! 
Far-sightedness, a strong will power, and an unyielding determination marked  Ranjit da’s student days, and later characterized  his life’s work and its many and varied successes. Such stellar qualities of character as he possessed commanded our unqualified admiration.  
Today, when Ranjit da is no longer with us, we feel that it was our privilege and our good fortune to have had him as close relative, deeply sympathetic as he was and full of empathy. We feel the emptiness of his absence every minute of our lives. 
In the end, we fervently and fondly wish that Ranjit da’s “otherhome” is serene and peaceful—and from that “farland” he will continue to inspire us.

Jethu as we knew him, was already an icon for his academic excellence to all of us children growing up in the Bandyopadhyay family.
However, he will rather remain an icon to me for his ability to put people at ease.Its a rare ability and a lot of people have already commented on that.
I rediscovered Jethu as a friend and guide later in life - the days spent in Augusta,pampered by him and Jethima, remains a high point when we were overseas.
Jethu, you never failed to put a smile on our face,near or far,wherever we were - we really miss you!

I came to know Ranjitda through my exhusband.But him and Chandadi never made me feel like a stranger.He was very supportive when I needed his help and for him I could have my daughter's custody.Both chandadi and Ranjitda came to my place when I had nobody by my side.They had been always my well wishrs.I am ever grateful for their support.He was a very just and truthful person and always straight forward regardless who you are.

In November 2010, the technical community involved in the design of concrete-related nuclear structures
experienced the loss of one of our most valued colleagues. To many, he was a contemporary; to some, a
mentor and friend; and to others, the “go-to” expert in his field.
As a structural engineer, Ranjit L. Bandyopadhyay left his imprint on the design of many nuclear-related
structures. With the US Department of Energy’s Savannah River Project, Ranjit was a principal engineer
specializing in concrete structures. He was Chair of the American Concrete Institute’s Committee 349
(Concrete Nuclear Structures), and an active member of ACI Committee 355 (Anchorage to Concrete).
He grew up in Calcutta, India, and excelled in top-ranked educational institutions: Presidency College in
Calcutta; the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kharaghpur; and then Leeds University in England.
He had high integrity and drive, and took a keen personal interest in people. He had an incredibly warm and
friendly approach, linked with a broad smile that none of us will ever forget.
Ranjit had a life of accomplishment as an engineer, a community leader, and a devoted family man.
His sudden death came as a particular shock since he remained, at the age of 67, a fitness
enthusiast. He died of heart-related complication on November 26, 2010 in Augusta, Georgia. He is
survived by his loving wife of nearly 43 years, Chhanda; his son Arijit; his daughter and son-in-law,
Rangana and Mikaal Abdulla; his grandson Aamir Lal; and his granddaughters Imaan Rani and
Aamina Devi.
They say the only thing you take with you when you're gone is what you leave behind. Ranjit left
behind a lot. Although this tribute cannot make up for his loss, it is a permanent expression, on
behalf of his colleagues, of how much he meant to each one of us

Dear Chhanda di, Guddi, and Tatum:

This is how Baby and I would like to remember Ranjit da:

We have known Ranjit da (and Chhanda di) for a long time, both as a friend and as a surrogate elder brother.  In the latter role, Ranjit da was caring, solicitous, and always offered wise counsel.  As a friend, he was warm, generous, and kind, and, yes, witty and humorous, too.  Of the many endearing memories we have of Ranjit da, one stands out the most: it was when he (and Chhanda di) visited us in Statesboro in the summer of 2009.  During the time they spent with us, Ranjit da was relaxed and convivial, and over cups of steaming hot tea, he was in a genially reminiscent mood, musing and recalling incidents from the past, all the while joking, in his own inimitable way, but also paying handsome tributes to his many friends and family members. Baby and I would like to remember Ranjit da as we saw him then: amiable and animated, gracious, expansive, charming, and cheerful.  
And Guddi and Tatum, you are right: Ranjit da was a father par excellence, a model for aspiring dads to emulate.
Ranjit da’s absence will leave an emptiness in our hearts that will be difficult to fill—and for a very long time.

My dad and I had the greatest father-son relationship.  No father-son was closer than us. I could joke with him and he could do the same to me.  My fondest memories of my dad was when I was in school and after a hard day at work he would help me with my homework everyday without complaint. He was my best friend and confidante.  He was an unbelievable human being who cared deeply for his family.  We had a special bond. Everyone will say this about their father; my father was a saint. He always knew what I was thinking before I told him. We talked constantly on the phone about anything and everything.  He gave his family unconditional love and received it too. He was a loving son, brother, Uncle, brother-in-law, father-in-law, grandfather, husband, and father. There wasn’t a thing he wouldn’t do for us.  
There was never a time when I couldn’t call my dad and know that he would have the perfect answer for any issue I encountered.  One of his favorite answers was that it is only difficult when you think it is difficult. Well, Baba this is difficult but I know with your supreme guidance, I’ll get through anything and I know when I feel down you’re the person who is cheering me on to succeed when I think I can’t do it. 
Baba, you were an instrumental part of my life. You always believed in me when others did not. You provided me the confidence to go beyond my own belief. Thank you for everything.   
You left earth too soon but your beautiful spirit will live on in my heart and mind forever. I’ll see you later Baba. I will always cherish the beautiful memories we made together. You’re amazing!!!!

Our Dear Ranjit As I Knew Him: 

Ranjit was always a brother to me.Together with him,Chanda,Guddi and Tatum were a part of our extended family. 

Ranjit`s sudden and premature passing away had deeply hurt me personally and cast a shadow of gloom in our lives. I had known Ranjit over 50 years since our IIT days back in 60`s.A very soft spoken,humble,intelligent and good conversionalist as I saw him since then. 

We met Ranjit and Chanda,to our pleasant surprise, at a picnic in London after a gap of many years.We started keeping a close touch with each other since then.Ranjit came over to US in 1977.The moment he arrived in NY,he contacted us.My other brother Partha,me,my wife Roma and my little daughter were all settled down in Houston,Texas back then.We all requested and invited him with open heart to come down to Houston and stay with us.He was with us for about an year,living like a close-knit and loving family,huddled in a small two-bed room apartment,sharing and sacrificing for one anther.He and Patha,like my two brothers,helped us in all possible ways, specially their Boudi in the kitchen after work and in the week ends.We shared lot of wonderful events,funs and enjoyments together.I still believe,this was a truely most memorable and pleasant phase in our life.We all cherish the sweet memories of our eventful days we left behind.Partha and Ranjit then parted when their family Sreelekha,Joyee,Kuchum,Bony,Chanda,Guddi and Tatum joined the respactive family in Houston.Luckily,we were all in Houston and kept in close touch with one another.Our children grew up in Houston toghether.Ranjit was a man of generous heart,full of love and compassion.He always treated our children like his own and was concerned about their wellbeing.He was a caring husband,loving father of Guddi and Tatum He was also concerned about all of us even living away from houston and inquired about how we were doing by regular phone calls. I cannot express my sadness thru this heart-breaking loss of a brother, so loving and respectful, in words. To Chanda,Guddy and Tatum-I say this that we are always with you sharing your grief and bereavement during this difficult period of your life.We pray for your strength and comfort of your minds. 

To you Ranjit,I say that we will alwyas love you and miss you for the rest of our life.Your smiling face and abundant love will always be in our heart and mind and pray for your peace.

I was shocked to hear about passing away of Ranjit. There are many memories related to him from our temple to our workplace. He was one of the architect of HTS (Hindu Temple Society) Bylaws. His knowledge and experience have benefited the Indian community and work at SRS. I remember a few instances when he said he will quit SRS and may be retired or come back as a subcontractor. I always discouraged him because he was very valuable to our workplace. I never thought that God willl retire him so soon. I will always cherish his memories. Ranjitda was like my older brother, a good friend and a mentor. Today I am here on behalf of the ACI Nuclear Structures Code Committee to say a few words of tribute to this special man.
Ranjitda was the chairman of the committee.   He was well liked and well respected by the engineering community in general and committee members in particular. 
He had a tremendous sense of responsibility.  He even called me the day before he was admitted to the hospital to explain the status of the code work and what to do in his absence.  This is just one example of how committed and thoughtful Ranjitda was in all the work that he did. 
For the last two months I have been flooded with phone calls and emails from the committee members to inquire about his health status.  As I informed them on Friday about the death of Ranjitda, words of condolences filled my mail box.  They told me to convey to the grieving family that you are in their thoughts and prayers, and the void he left will be felt by all of us.
His death has stunned and bewildered all of us who were close to him. 

Your colleagues in ACI bid farewell this afternoon, to a very special person, a leader, a friend, and a mentor to many of us.  They say the only thing you take with you when you're gone is what you leave behind; and Ranjitda left behind a lot.

Hello Jethima,
I have been trying to write a few lines on this site for sometime now..but honestly, I am falling short of words to describe Jethu for what he was..still IS!!! He has been so much more than just an in-law for me. 


I feel a lump in my throat every time I think about Jethu and the wonderful time that we all had in Augusta 2 years back. And trust me, I can never cook biriyani at home without thinking about all those encouraging things that he had to say....about the "nobo badhu" and her culinary skills.
He is missed a lot and loved a lot more.


I know it must be so much more difficult for you having spent those precious 47 years in each others' company....

Reading what everyone said about baropisha in this Guest book, I have only one thing to add - I am amazed to see how lucky baropisha was to get so much love from everyone! Above all, he who is missed by family and friends so very much, undoubtedly have been one of the best men leaving so far. He has truly been successful in winning all our hearts.
