Caroline Azetta Butler, 96, originally of Meyersdale, PA, passed peacefully on March 8, 2026, just two days shy of her 97th birthday. Born March 10, 1929, in Meyersdale to Elmer and Laura Sutton, Caroline was the beloved matriarch of her large family and a woman whose loving spirit and feisty personality left an impression on everyone she met.
Caroline had a gift for bringing joy into any room. She was the life of every party and, with a grin, often the butt of every joke. Her quick wit was legendary—when asked, “How do you feel?” she never missed the chance to reply with a smirk, “With my hands!” Her humor, paired with her gentle heart, made her impossible not to love.
She dedicated her life to raising and caring for her family. A devoted mother, wife, grandmother, great‑grandmother, and great‑great‑grandmother, Caroline found her greatest happiness in the people she loved. She enjoyed crafting, baking, gardening, and any moment spent surrounded by family. She attended Hope Community Church in Hedgesville, WV, where her kindness and warmth were felt by many.
Caroline is survived by her children: Mary Hersh of Martinsburg, WV; Judy and William Livengood of Hedgesville, WV; Anita Hersh of Winchester, VA; Doris and Charles Lewis of Paw Paw, WV; Nancy and Timothy Yost of Lost River, WV; Linda Anaya of Hedgesville, WV; and Rodney and Amber Hersh of Hyndman, PA; along with 31 grandchildren, 46 great‑grandchildren, and 14 great‑great‑grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, William “Bill” Hersh; her dear friend, William Denny; her second husband, John Butler; her siblings; two children, Walter “Bud” Hersh and Kenneth Hersh; one son-in-law, Michael Anaya; one grandchild, Jamie Riggleman; and one great‑grandchild, Gabriel Anaya.
Caroline was a sweet soul whose smile could win over any heart. Her legacy lives on in the laughter she inspired, the love she gave freely, and the generations of family who carry her spirit forward.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2026, from 5:00–7:00 p.m., and again on Friday, March 13, 2026, from 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m., followed by a service at Rosedale Funeral Home & Cemetery, 917 Cemetery Rd, Martinsburg, WV 25404.
