G. Douglas Hurt, age 80, passed away at home on July 30, 2025. He was the devoted husband of 27 years, to Dianne Irey; and the proud father of four daughters, Joanne Hurt (John Moore), Sharon Hurt, Jennifer Smith (Luke Smith), and Kristen Carty (Rich Carty). He was a loving grandfather to Jeffrey Robb, Ellie Robb, Brennan Moore, Haley Rose Moore, Declan Davidson, Gray Davidson, Emerson Smith, Milla Smith, Linden Smith, Tess Carty, Devon Carty, and Raegan Carty. He was a caring brother to Robert Hurt, Ann DeFranceaux, Linda Andrieux, Lori Hurt, and Randy Hurt; and a dear friend to three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
In the mid 1960's, after studying at the University of Maryland, Doug turned his focus to raising his young family, but his love of learning lasted throughout his life. He was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed historical nonfiction. Doug started and ran two businesses, J&D Dental Lab and Douglas Dental Lab; and for the past years, was co-owner of Eastern Prosthetic Dental Lab, with his wife, Dianne. He took great pride in his craftsmanship and continued to work on cases after his official retirement. He believed a hand-built crown was still the preferred approach. During his career, Doug served as a board member and president of the Maryland and DC Dental Laboratory Association.
As his daughters grew, Doug enthusiastically led adventures that included camping, skiing, horseback riding, surfing, and jumping big waves at the beaches of Ocean City and Rehoboth. A particular joy of his was watching his daughters' sporting events and this enthusiasm extended to his 12 grandchildren, traveling the east coast, west coast, and mid-Atlantic to cheer them on. Doug's interest in and support of his grandchildren and their pursuits also found him at birthday celebrations, holiday gatherings, theater performances, and graduations. Doug's passionate athletic pursuit was golf. An avid player, he spent many hours playing the course at Kenwood Country Club. The friendships created on the greens were as meaningful as the game itself. Doug's storytelling endeared him to many and guaranteed fast friends.
Doug was born in Champaign, IL on September 19, 1944, to Hugh Hurt and Harriette (McMillin) Hurt. As a young child, the family moved frequently for the Army, living in Anchorage, AK, Walnut Creek, CA, and Champaign, IL, before settling for many years in Bethesda, MD. Doug and Dianne lived in Columbia, MD, and for the past 15 months, have enjoyed their new home and garden in Martinsburg, WV.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held at Rosedale Funeral Home on August 15, 2025 at 12 pm until time of Memorial Service at 1 pm.
