Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Joyce built a life centered around kindness, service, and a deep devotion to her Christian faith. She retired from the YMCA, where she touched countless lives with her warm spirit, dependable presence, and genuine care for the people she served.
A devout Christian, Joyce cherished her Bible study group and the friendships she formed within her faith community. Her love for Scripture sustained her throughout her life, and her life's Psalm 139 brought her comfort, strength, and peace.
The last two years of Joyce’s life were among her happiest. She lived with her granddaughter Jessica Horn and Jessica’s husband Chris, surrounded by love, laughter, and the joy of her great-grandchildren, Paisley and Camden. These years were filled with companionship, comfort, and cherished family moments. Additionally, her youngest son, Kelly, his wife Katie, and their children, Tabby, Gracie, and Holly, moved back home from the West Coast. Together, this allowed Joyce to experience what she loved most—family.
Joyce is survived by her children:
• Kevin Rutledge, his wife Holly, and his former wife Kay Rutledge, who remains a cherished part of the family, along with their daughter Jessica Horn (Chris) and children Paisley and Camden.
• Kelly Rutledge (Katie) and their children Tabby, Gracie, and Holly.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Ditzel, and her sister Lou Ellen Mercer, both of whom she loved dearly.
A private service will be held on Friday, December 12, with a celebration of life planned for a later date. Joyce will be lying to rest at Parklawn Cemetery in Rockville, Maryland.
Joyce will be remembered for her compassion, her faith, her strength, and the gentle way she supported everyone around her. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished and the many lives she touched.
