Metaxia will be buried at Rosedale Cemetery (Martinsburg, WV) next to be her beloved husband, James P. Lincoln who predeceased her in 2014.
Metaxia was born in Yeraki, Sparta, Greece, in 1931, one of six children to her parents, George and Alexandra Maroudas. At 93, she was the last surviving child until October 26 when she succumbed after a long battle with dementia, osteoporosis, and congestive heart failure.
Metaxia is survived by her daughter, Alexandra Michaels, as well as her grandchildren, Anne (Socrates), James, April (Andy)and Nicole(Tyler). She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Alise, Theo, Reagan, Sydney, Taylor, McKinley, Walker and Baby Overton coming in March. A son, Philip Michaels Jr., predeceased his mother in 2020 at the age of 68. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as close friends.
Metaxia was born in a small village in Greece and after WW 2 and the Greek Civil War, she emigrated to the United States aboard a military ship, landing in New York at the age of 17 in 1948 to join her mother and some siblings already in America. Her father and other siblings came to America later.
At the age of 18, she married Philip Harry Michaels, (an immigrant from Samos, Greece) and gave birth to two children in 1951 (daughter) and 1952 (son). Philip was already established in America, was 30 years her senior and was fairly fluent in English. At that time, it was common for recent immigrants from Greece to marry older men. And it was also common for immigrants to take on Americanized names, hence the name "Maxine." In 1974, Philip Sr. passed away. Metaxia got a second chance at love when she met and married James P. Lincoln. Two opposite people you never met in your life: "Maxine," as Jim called her, was 4'11" and Jim was a towering 6' tall. He was born and bred in Pennsylvania and she spoke broken English. Somehow, they were a match and thus started a great love story between two very different people. They were married for 48 years and built a retirement home in Hedgesville, W, where they hosted many gatherings of friends of family in their lovely home on 4 acres of land. Jim passed away from cancer in 2014 in the home where Metaxia took care of him until the end. After she became disabled and had a diagnosis of dementia, Metaxia went to live with her daughter, Alexandra, in
Silver Spring, MD. She spent the last 3 ½ years in the love and care of the staff at the Friends House Retirement Village and Hospice where she passed away.
Maxine will be buried at Rosedale Cemetery (Martinsburg, WV) next to be her beloved husband, James P. Lincoln (who predeceased her in 2014) on October 30, 2024 at 1 pm.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hedges Chapel in Hedgesville, 668 Mt. Lake Road Hedgesville, WV 25427. In the memo line the chapel requests you mark Metaxia “Maxine” L.
