

Thelma Sholley Spencer, 103, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 30, 2024. She was a resident of Sunrise Senior Living in Reston Town Center, formally of Martinsburg WV. Thelma was born in Easton PA on June 6, 1921 to Irvin Ephraim & Anna Margaret Sholley. She joined the U.S. Navy as a WAVE during WW2 and served at the Bureau of Aeronautics in Washington DC where she held the rank of Yeoman 1 Class. Following her honorable discharge from the WAVES in 1946, she continued to serve her country as a civil servant for the Bureau of Navy Aeronautics. Thelma was raised in the First Moravian Church in Easton, PA and would continue worshipping at Springfield United Methodist Church in Springfield VA. Once she retired to Martinsburg WV, she became a lifetime member at Pikeside United Methodist Church. Thelma is survived by her daughter Gail Anne Saour (Spencer) and son-in-law George Saour; godson Glenn Erb (Vickie Erb) and a host of nieces and nephews. Thelma was predeceased by her husband, William Walter (Walt) Spencer, younger sister, Ruth Elanore Erb and younger brother, Irvin E. "Duke" Sholley, Jr. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Monday; September 9, 2024 at Pikeside with Pastor Bill Ball officiating (25 Paynes Ford Road, Martinsburg WV 25405). Visitation will take place 1 hour before the service. Interment will be at Rosedale Cemetery in Martinsburg WV. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Thelma's memory be made to Pikeside UMC (25 Paynes Ford Road, Martinsburg WV 25405).
