Elizabeth Meo Collins ( nee O’Gorman), known to her family and friends as Betty, passed away peacefully in Virginia Beach, Virginia on August 6, 2015. Born September 20, 1929, Betty was the eldest of nine children belonging to Thomas and Frances O’Gorman of Astoria Queens, New York.
Betty spent her childhood and teenage years growing up in Astoria. It was here that she met the love of her life Carmine Meo. After a brief courtship the two were married in June of 1946. The couple later moved to Flushing, New York where they raised their children Judi, Carol Ann and John Meo. Betty and Carmine remained married until Carmine’s untimely death in 1970. Many years later Betty would marry Russ Collins. They remained together until Russ’ death in 2008.
Like so many people of her time, Betty did not finish public high school. However, she did receive her GED and went on to graduate as an LPN from nursing school. She had a long and storied career at Creedmoor Hospital in Queens, New York until her retirement in the late 1980’s.
When not working, Betty enjoyed gardening, crafting and home holiday decorating. In addition, her family can attest to the fact that she was also a fabulous cook. Betty also loved spending time with her family. She especially cherished and loved her grandchildren PJ, Paul, Michael, Brian and Shayna as well as her great grandchildren Christopher, MiaRose and Luke. She will be greatly missed by her entire family.
Predeceasing Betty are her parents Thomas and Francis O’Gorman, her brothers Jimmy, Tommy, Donnie and Dickie, along with her spouses Carmine Meo and Russ Collins. She is Survived by her children Judi Meo, Carol Ann Meo (Harper), John (Rita) Meo, her grand children and great grand children as well as her sisters Frances Cinquemani, Kay (Fred) Matthews, Pat (John) Robertson and Loretta (Robert) Meissner and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
