

Born on October 26, 1936, in Brooklyn, John was the beloved son of John and Almerinda Medina. Known affectionately to his family as “Sonny,” he was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, cherished brother, uncle, and friend whose presence brought joy and strength to everyone around him.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1957 to 1961. Following his military service, he went on to serve as a Policeman and later as a Detective with the NYPD for 20 years, spending most of his time in the 83rd Precinct in Brooklyn. Dedicating his career to protecting and serving his community with honor and integrity. His work ethic, courage, and commitment earned the respect of both colleagues and friends alike.
John shared 64 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Joanna Medina. Together they built a beautiful family rooted in love, loyalty, and generosity. He was a proud and devoted father to Gina (John) and Lori (Bobby), and an adoring grandfather to Nicole (Anthony), Johnny, Tyler, and Christian. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and there was nothing he loved more than cheering them on at their sporting events. He was truly their biggest fan.
He was a loving brother to Diana, Ludy, Evelyn, Elba, Eneida, Gloria,Elizabeth and Dennis, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who adored him and looked up to him throughout their lives.
Outside of his career, John embraced life to the fullest. He loved vacationing in Florida and Cabo San Lucas, spending time with family, and creating memories with those he loved most. He was known for lighting up every dance floor he stepped on with his incredible dancing and infectious energy. His legendary sweet tooth was well known — he never turned down a piece of chocolate.
John’s generosity was unmatched. His family never wanted for anything because he always made sure they were cared for and supported. To know John was to love him. He was larger than life, an absolute legend to everyone fortunate enough to know him, and his memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.
Visitation will be held at James Funeral Home, 540 Broadway, Massapequa, NY 11758, US, on May 8, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Our Lady of Lourdes, 855 Carmans Rd, Massapequa Park, NY 11762, US, on May 9, 2026, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.
Entombment will follow at St. Charles / Resurrection Cemeteries, 2015 Wellwood Ave, Farmingdale, NY 11735, US, on May 9, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 12:30 pm.
