Dear Ann, You were such an inspiration! I was about 30 years old and you were maybe 58 or so when we served together in Peace Corps Guatemala. Now I am 63, serving in Peace Corps Mexico. If you did it, so can I!  We had the biggest adventure of our lives together! We traveled across Nicaragua during the Contra war, trying to get to Costa Rica. People told us the bus routes were closed because there were land mines on the highways, so we took a boat across Lake Managua, all night. When we got to the other side, we heard gunshot and grenades in the forest on the other side, so we could not get to Costa Rica that way -- we had to get back on that boat and go all the way back! By then one of the bus routes had opened up. The bus attendant put our backpacks on top of the bus. We didn't trust that our stuff would still be in our bags by the end of the trip. The attendant said we couldn't ride on top of the bus with our bags and he said, "don't worry, it will be OK." Ann you looked at him and looked at me straight in the eye and said to me "Suba!" "Climb!" So we climbed the ladder to the top of the bus and rode with our bags, ducking when the bus went under low-slung electric wires. We finally made it to Costa Rica where the adventure did not stop.  We went in a small boat to the Oso Peninsula, hiked there through mud and rain for an entire day while monkeys threw branches at us and scolded us.  You said "I can't wait to see another human face!" We reached a wilderness camp and set up tents for the night. Our feet were pretty tired the next day. We left the camp, hiked across a river and found a gravel road on the other side. We decided to wait for a ride. Finally,  we heard a vehicle coming. It arrived--an old battered pick-up truck with lots of men riding in the back. We climbed up. They were conversing about the event they were going to--they were illegal gold miners on their way to a communist party meeting! Peace always to you Ann,  my Sister of the Road, Love, Janie

Ann, you were an amazing cousin, when I think back to the times we spent  together in Florida before you moved to California.  You were the most given of all cousins, you always came when you knew  we needed you. My love and prayers are with Dan, and the family, you left a big hole that will never be filled. You are with Glenn , your parents, brothers, sister, aunts, uncle, and cousins. See you again Ann, send our love to everyone.  Love you Ann, RIP

Dearest Ann

You were that kind of person we meet once and never forget. Valérie and I had the chance to see you twice or so. Your kindness, smile and humor will always be in our heart. All we can hope is that our beloved losses meet you overthere. We think of your family who loves you so much. No need to say you will stay in their heart forever.  

We love you and will light a candle in our small church of our small French village of Broxeele

I remember staying at Aunt Ann’s house and Danny, Barry and I when I was little girl. I always loved staying the night with her and Uncle Dan and the cousins.  We  would play in the woods by the house in Revere Beach.  Aunt Ann was always a loving Aunt and such a humanitarian. I will miss her so much. Heaven truly received an angel. My condolences to all thinking of you all on this sad day. 😘

Aunt Ann was a very special person. She was always there to take care anyone who needed her.     Aunt Ann might have left us but she will always be in my heart.   I can only hope I am as caring as she was

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Daniel Heffernan; her children, Daniel, Barry (Beth Williams), Kerry, Joy Ann, Lee Ann (Peter Sternberg), Faith; her grandchildren, Rosalyn Sternberg, Quinn Sternberg, Ken Heffernan; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
