Catherine Jewell Holloway Hooten, 92, of Jackson, Georgia passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 8, 2025 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Jackson, Georgia on June 30, 1932 to the late Elon Lewis Holloway and Dewey Hollis Holloway, Catherine lived a full and feisty life rooted in faith, family, and community.
She spent her married life in McDonough, Georgia in the Ola community, and later returned to her hometown of Jackson, where she lived out her final years. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, James David Hooten (October 17, 1927 – June 7, 2003), 1 granddaughter Kimberly Clotfelter, 2 great-grandchildren Zach Gordon and Brittany Abbott, and one great-great grandson Walker Abbott. Her brother John Paul Holloway of Hampton and her sister Annie Pearl Hooten of McDonough also preceded her.
She is survived by her beloved sister, Betty Chumbley of Hampton and her four children: Kay Osborne of McDonough, Barbara Ferguson of Loganville, Juanita White of Jackson, and Angela Aresco of Portland CT. Catherine was a devoted mother and grandmother. She leaves behind a legacy that spans five generations with 8 surviving grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Her love for her family was unmatched and her home was always a place of warmth, laughter, love and full of delicious food!
A strong, spirited woman, Catherine dedicated much of her life to raising her children, working long hours in her garden, canning and preserving her garden vegetables & fruits, crocheting & knitting and creating a loving, memorable home. In 1975, she returned to the workforce as a school bus driver, where she found joy and camaraderie among the children she transported each day. Between bus routes, she worked at Stuckey’s with her daughter Juanita and later completed her career as the manager of Sizzling Platter Steakhouse in McDonough. In her later years she was devoted to helping take care of her grandchildren and was sure to always be there for them. Ask any of her grandkids and they will tell you, you couldn't have dreamt of a better or more loving grandma.
Catherine’s unwavering faith guided her throughout her life. She was a devoted Christian and a member of Sharon Baptist Church in her later years, where she spent much of her time enjoying the escapades of the senior group there. She had a very devoted circle of friends there at Sharon and cherished each and every one of them. Her love for life was a reflection of her love for God, and her spirit will live on in all who knew and loved her.
A memorial service will be held in her honor on Wednesday, June 18th at 2:00 pm in the Sharon Baptist Church Chapel in Ola/McDonough Georgia.
