

Mr. Charles George Claxton, 80 of McDonough, Georgia passed away February 14, 2023. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Charles and Sarah (Smith) Claxton. He was preceded in death by his wife Diane (Camp) Claxton, brothers, Gordan and Donald Claxton and sister, Virginia (Claxton) Bolen.
Mr. Claxton proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy. During his service he completed four tours in Antarctica. He serviced on the U.S. carrier Lake Champlain during the early years of NASA and assisted in picking up our first Astronaut, Alan Shepherd. Other duty stations included, Rhode Island, Pensacola Florida, Kodiak Alaska, Whidbey Island Washington and Coronado California. He also fulfilled two West Pac tours on the carrier U.S.S. Kittyhawk. He attained the rank of E-7 Chief Petty Officer. He enjoyed time with his family, especially grand and great-grand babies. He was an avid Braves and Bulldogs fan. Charles will be greatly missed by many.
Charles is survived by his son, Charles (Rose) Claxton; daughter, Laura (Mark) Atencio; grandchildren, Meagan (Atencio) Whisenant, Aaron Claxton, Mallory (Atencio) Taylor, Ryan Claxton, Jeremy Claxton, Kelsey (Claxton) Nickel, Matthew Atencio, Elton Claxton, Christopher Claxton and James Claxton, great-grandchildren Abagail Atencio, Charles Claxton, Zoey Claxton, Aiden Whisenant, Levi Claxton, Arianna Claxton, Henry Nickel, Harvey Claxton, Jack Nickel, Owen Claxton, Rosemarie Claxton, Claire Nickel, Evan Claxton, Oliver Claxton and coming soon, George Nickel; brothers Gerald and Brian Claxton, sisters Mary Floyd and Jean McDonald.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, February 19, 2023 at Haisten Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Morrow, Georgia. The family will receive friends 5:00 - 7:00 pm Saturday, February 18, 2023 at the funeral home.
