Marion Kenneth (Ken) Johnston of Jackson, GA passed into Heaven on May 6, 2024. Ken was born in Atlanta, GA on June 26, 1937 to the late Rev Clyde G. and Bonnie Pearl Power Johnston. He graduated from Hapeville High School in 1955 and served on active duty in the United States Air Force from 1955-1959 as an aerial gunner in the Tactical Air Command on the B-66 aircraft.
Ken always believed that when he joined the Air Force in 1955 that God was leading him to his future bride, Wendy Thorpe of Sutton Bridge, England, who at the time was only 13 years old. They were married in May of 1959 in England and celebrated nearly 60 years of marriage and raised three children together before God called her home in April 2019.
After his discharge from the Air Force, Ken worked at Delta Air Lines for 35+ years and retired in November 1994. During the 1970’s, Ken attended Clayton Junior College and took courses in aviation administration. He was very active in the Baptist church and served faithfully as a Deacon, finance team member, long range planning committee, altar counselor, greeter, usher, Sunday School care group leader and anything else he could find to do. He is presently a member of Grace Baptist Church in Locust Grove. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, coin collecting, and photography.
Lasting memories surround our 50th anniversary celebration where we were remarried by our pastor in Locust Grove. The celebration continued in England as Wendy’s cousin arranged for us to be at the altar in the same church, at the same time as fifty years earlier and it happened to be on the same day, for the Vicar to say a thanksgiving prayer for God’s blessings during fifty years of marriage.
Ken is preceded in death by his wife Wendy Thorpe Johnston, his parents, a brother William Clyde Johnston and by a Grandson, Ryan Dorsey Johnston. He is survived by his daughter Lori Ann Davis (Mike), two sons, Scott Thorpe Johnston, and Mark Anthony Johnston (Angela). There are four Grandchildren Jenna Lauren James (David), Zachary Michael Davis, Kyle Thorpe Johnston, and Maggie Pearl Johnston. Seven Great Grandchildren, Michael James, Benjamin James, Eliana James, Noah James, Daniel James, Samuel James, and Gabriel James.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Grace Baptist in Locust Grove, Ga.
