Robert Eugene "Gene" Hughes was born in Atlanta on February 10, 1939 to the late Robert Argo Hughes and Mary Francis Davis. Four days after his 18th birthday Gene set out to serve his country in the United States Air Force. He wore his military uniform for 4 years, including a year overseas, working as a communications specialist. Gene would continue in communications as a civilian through his career as a foreman dispatcher with Jones Trucking.
Along the way Gene met and fell in love with Linda Hornsby and shared a marriage that would last for the next 48 years building a family as they went. Gene's friends were as important to him as his family. He not only made friends easily, and he had many, but he was also the truest example of a loyal friend.
Gene took pleasure in shopping, especially for clothes and shoes, which was evident by how sharp he dressed. He was also a big fan of the "Ramblin' Wreck" of Georgia Tech. (Go Yellow Jackets).
Gene was a faithful member of Oakland Baptist Church and not long ago he rededicated himself to his Lord. His faith and relationship with Jesus Christ assures us that on October 15, 2021 he was reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife Linda, his parents and his sisters Grace Dunson and Betty Bensing.
His memory will live on through his daughters Dorrie Hughes of Newnan, Ga, Susan Shull of Buford, Ga and Sandy Hughes of Hampton, Ga., six grandchildren,12 great grandchildren, his sister Nancy Garner of Locust Grove, Ga., brother Robert Eugene "Lil Gene" Davis of Ropesville, Ga., nieces and nephews and several close cousins.
Gene's life will be celebrated on Thursday October 21, 2021 at 1:00 pm at Oakland Baptist Church in McDonough, Ga. with the family receiving friends from 12:00 until 1:00 pm.
