On Monday, August 22, 2022, Sara Pierson Mitcham, 103, passed away peacefully at her granddaughter’s home, with her family at her bedside. Born April 7, 1919, Sara was the second of four children born to James Clarence Pierson and Sally Lou Harbuck Pierson. She graduated form Crawford County High School in 1935 and the University of Georgia in 1939, where she met her future husband, Buck Mitcham, Sr. It was love at first sight and the beginning of fifty-eight years of marriage. They were blessed with one son. “Little Buck”, and five grandchildren who were all the loves of her life.
Sara was a true servant, whether in her church, her home, or her community. She was active in her church, First Baptist Church McDonough for over seventy years. She was a faithful member as she taught many Sunday School classes, served in the WMU, as well as many committees. She was a charter member of the Gleanors Sunday School class. She was also very active in the American Legion Auxiliary where she served as state president and also served in many capacities in the VA hospital.
Sara was an avid gardener until the age of 96. She loved nothing more than growing her own food, fishing, spending time with her grandchildren, or caring for friends and family. She was famous for feeding others - whether it was her caramel cake, pound cake, sugar cookies with sprinkles or countless other delicious foods. She was a true Christian servant and southern lady. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Buck Sr., a daughter in law, Tonya Mitcham, and three siblings, William Pierson, Lillian Breedlove, and Kathleen Madden. She leaves behind her son, Buck Mitcham (Melissa), five grandchildren, Natalie Barrett (Beau) of Macon, GA, Mallory Mitcham, Andrew Mitcham, Lane Mitcham and Luke Mitcham, all of Perry, GA, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, loved ones, and friends. A celebration of her life will be held at Haisten Funeral Home on August 27, 2022 at 1:00. The family will receive visitors prior to this from 10:30 – 12:30.
