I enjoyed the umpire weekends with Steve. A great friend, umpire and person. I’ve spent many good times at his house, my house, or working at SEC and ACC baseball games. 
He was a wonderful family man with a contagious laugh. You are missed.

Manders 

Steve’s obituary beautifully captures the husband he was, the father he was, and the service he gave to the State of Georgia. One thing it does not fully say is just how great a college baseball umpire Steve Manders was—especially to those of us in the SEC and ACC.

I was fortunate to know Steve for over 25 years of my career. In my opinion, he was one of the very best umpires to ever work college baseball. He was a “guy’s guy” and an “umpires umpire —the kind of person everyone respected and loved being around. No matter the series or the crew, Steve made the game better.

As time passed and the game moved on, many of us drifted apart, as happens in life. But we will always have the memories of long weekends together—working games, talking about family, sharing laughs—while quietly making the sacrifices that come with the profession.

I will always remember Steve’s laugh, how deeply he loved his wife, and how much he looked forward to getting home to her and the kids every Sunday.

Save me a spot in the locker room, my friend. You are loved and will be missed by all of us in the umpire community of the SEC and ACC.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Manders family.I knew Steve  through his many years as an umpire for us at Georgia Tech and The Atlantic Coast Conference.He was one of the best in the college game.More importantly he was a good man.Heaven is getting a good one.On behalf of my family and The Tech Family I pray that peace will be with you.Danny Hall

I was crushed to learn of Steve's passing. I knew him as a kind, considerate, generous man who clearly was dedicated to his family, as he spoke of them often. Though we would only see each other during the baseball season, each spring was as if no time at all had passed since the previous season. Steve was a partner on the field that anyone was proud to "go to war with", as he was a man of integrity and was fiercely loyal to those who umpired with him. I am proud to call him my friend, and may God bless Mindy and his daughters in this time of sorrow.

My deepest sympathies and condolences to the Manders family. I was lucky to have had the pleasure to umpire many times over the years with Steve in the ACC and around the country for the NCAA. Baseball weekends provide a lot of free time. Steve would always talk about his family and friends. A true family man. Rest in peace my friend.

Incredibly sad news and I’m very sorry for your loss.    I have fond memories of growing up next to Mr. Steve…  Playing basketball in the driveway as a little kid or just talking about random things in the side yard.  I know he will be missed and my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I went to the same high school as Steve, he was a few years older but everyone knew who he was, just a couple of years ago I started playing golf in a group in Griffin with Steve and some old friends from school. I really enjoyed his company and playing golf with him. 

Steve was a great guy and will be missed. Rest in peace brother!

Steve was a tremendously dedicated public servant who made great contributions behind the scenes that helped all Georgia citizens throughout his 38 year career at the Georgia Department of Insurance.  He will be greatly missed.  It was an honor to work with him occasionally and to watch his insurance presentations.
