George L. "Chubbs" Cortez, Jr.

George L. “Chubbs” Cortez, Jr., 56, of McGregor, passed away Thursday, April 9, 2015 in a Waco hospital. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM, Friday, April 17, 2015 at Saint Eugene Catholic Church with Father Boniface Onjefu as celebrant.

Mr. Cortez was born on August 29, 1958 in Gatesville, Texas to Pauline (Lonzo) and George L. Cortez, Sr. He loved sports, playing baseball and football when he was in school and he umpired for all of the baseball leagues for several years. Mr. Cortez also loved playing dominos, fishing and playing Santa every Christmas. He was a member of the American Legion SAL and Saint Eugene Catholic Church where he served as an Altar Boy in his younger years. His parents and a brother-in-law; Edward Vargas, Sr. preceded him in death.

Survivors include his sisters; Barbara Marcussen and her husband, Doug, Shirley Rodriguez and her husband, Lupe, Amelia Vargas, Rita C. Resendez and Rachel Cummings and her husband, Eddie Pratt and several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Mr. Cortez was a very compassionate man, even after death, being a donor he is continuing to prolong and help other individuals.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Billy “Boy” Byford and his family for their support and friendship and to the MICU staff at Hillcrest Baylor Scott and White for their love and care that they gave to our brother.
