Bina was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina and was the eldest of five siblings. She attended Charleston High School, then graduated from St. Francis Xavier School of Nursing and became a registered nurse. After nursing school, Bina married the love of her life, Bill Wyllie, a Yankee, and a graduate of the Citadel, also in Charleston.
She and her husband of 61 years spent a career in the U.S. Army. During her husband’s military service, Bina worked as an RN at several hospitals near the installations where her husband was posted. After Bill’s military retirement, Bina continued her nursing career in northern Virginia, Charlotte NC, and Mechanicsville VA until her retirement after 49 years of dedicated service to others. She continued to volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital after her retirement.
Bina’s kindness and friendly personality always put others at ease. She had a strong work ethic which she learned from her late mother, Dale Odom Whetstone White, who raised her and her siblings as a single mother. Bina was a talented cook and baker, a master gardener, and had an eye for interior design. She delighted family and friends with her wonderful crocheted blankets and knit scarves that were made with love. She was devoted to her two sons and encouraged them to draw and watched them build hundreds of models and tree forts over the years, leading them down their own paths as architects. Bina also loved Fritz, their family dog of almost 20 years, and cried for days when they lost him.
Bina passed away after a three-year illness complicated by osteoporosis and dementia. Bina’s family will be forever grateful for the professional and loving care she received at the Covenant Woods healthcare facility.
Bina was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur Whetstone and Dale (Odom) Whetstone White; stepfather, Richard White; sisters, Faye Livingston, Linda Brandon, and Cindy Amaker; and brother, Wilbur “Butch” Whetstone.
She is survived by her beloved husband, William J “Bill” Wyllie; sons William Kevin Wyllie (wife Sandy) of Fairfax and Terrance Patrick Wyllie (wife Melissa) of Richmond; grandchildren Cameron, Heather, and Jimmy Wyllie of Fairfax, and Calder Wyllie of Richmond.
Relatives and friends may join the family for a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at the Wyllie Home in Mechanicsville. Interment will be held on a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
