He was born in McAllen, TX on May 3, 1934 to Herb & Bernice Carter. He became a Christian and was baptized at age 14 in the First Baptist Church, Edinburg, TX; that church licensed him to preach when he was 18. He received a B.A. degree at Howard Payne University, Brownwood, TX, in 1955, and in that year he married Geneva Reeves, who also graduated from Howard Payne.
Jack received a divinity degree from Golden Gate Baptist Seminary, Berkeley, CA, in 1958. He served as pastor of a Baptist church for U.S. military families in Kassel, Germany, 1964-1969 and was a Baptist missionary in Thailand from 1969-1975.
He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati in 1980 and was a professor in the Business School at Florida International University, Miami, before retiring to his present home in Mechanicsville in 1997.
Jack is survived by his wife, Geneva, daughters Jacqueline Mathews and Julie Sams, five grandsons and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA, on Monday, November 24, at 2 pm.
