James Robert Howell, 97, of Mechanicsville, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2019. He was born in King and Queen County on June 24, 1921 to Alex and Mary Brook Fogg Howell.
Jim attended Marriott High School and retired from Dupont Co. in 1986 with 43 years of service. He was recently preceded in death by his beloved wife of 35 years, Harriett Ball Schools Howell as well as five siblings, Gladys Brewer, Gertrude Wilson, Brookie Minter, Margaret Atkins and Linwood Howell.
He is survived by his brother, Melvin Howell and stepchildren, Diane Hale (Jim), Ron Schools (Sandy) and C.B. Schools (Terry); grandchildren, Chris Hale, Sara Broughton, Jake, Clay, Rachel and Jon Schools, 5 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
“Papa Jim” was an inspiration to many for his eternal optimism and continual devotion to family. He was a man with a gentle, sweet soul and will be forever missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home, 9271 Shady Grove Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. 23116, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Signal Hill Memorial Park.
