He was preceded in death by his mother, Thema, and beloved son, Dr. Jeffery Bond. Marshall is survived by his wife Diane of 57 years, son Dr. Mark Bond (Katharine), brother James, daughter-in-law Angie, grandchildren Kyle (Hannah), Meredith, Connor, Parker, Morgan, and Brady, and countless friends he considered family.
Marshall was born in Richmond, Virginia. He was a proud member of the 1959 graduating class of John Marshall High School and maintained many lifelong friendships with his classmates. In 2010 he retired after working for more than 30 years at Franco’s Fine Clothier in Lakeside. His sense of style was unparalleled.
An avid golfer, Marshall routinely shot below his age even as his health declined. He loved being near the water at Bugg’s Island, the River, and most especially at Emerald Isle where he vacationed for nearly 50 years. The only thing Marshall enjoyed more than golfing or relaxing by the water was cheering on his grandchildren. Their “Pappy” never missed horse shows nor baseball, field hockey, or lacrosse games. He was a regular at ice hockey games and was known to loudly heckle referee calls he disapproved of, even when the referee was his own grandson.
Marshall was the life of the party and his smile lit up every room he entered. His sense of humor and quick wit were unmatched. He was also kind, gentle, and generous. Marshall was loved by all those who knew him and is already missed tremendously.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 to 12:00 on Tuesday, July 25 at Woody Funeral Home - Atlee Chapel, immediately followed by a celebration of Marshall’s life beginning at noon. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be directed to the Deane Cheatham IV Memorial Fund at James Madison University.
