

Richard was the only child born to Rolfe Odell Hull and Carrie Virginia Thomas Hull. Richard graduated from Jefferson Senior High School in Roanoke, Virginia on June 8, 1951, prior to his seventeenth birthday. Richard not only excelled scholastically, but also loved baseball and basketball, and discovered that he had a gift for drawing and painting. Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army at age eighteen, and honorably served as a Morse Interceptor during and after the Korean War. At the end of his three-year enlistment, Richard returned to Virginia and began U.S. Army reserve duty. Richard began delving deeper into his interests in music and theatre, and accepted opportunities in broadcasting while completing sixty college credit hours at the University of Virginia Extension Division in Roanoke, Virginia and met his future wife, Shelly. Richard transferred to the University of Tampa in June 1961, married Shelly March 28, 1963, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science on August 9, 1963, and was ordered to active duty from U.S. Army Reserve on January 4, 1964, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. On March 6, 1964, Richard completed his Medical Service Corps Officer Basic Course at Brooks Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas before being assigned to Fort Chaffee, Arkansas as Detachment Commander for the Base Hospital from March 1964 to January 1965. Richard was promoted to first lieutenant on July 4, 1965, and served as Detachment Commander for the 85th Evacuation Hospital in Qui Nhon, Vietnam from August 1965 to August 1966. Upon his return home, Richard was assigned to McDonald Army Hospital Fort Eustis, Virginia before being honorably released from active-duty January 3, 1967, to begin his career as a Personnel Consultant, Business owner, and Realtor.
Richard was married to his precious wife, Shelly, for over 55 years before her passing on June 28, 2018. Together, they raised two sons, Richard Thomas (Rick) Hull, II (Brooke) of Henagar, Alabama, and John Rolfe Hull (Kelly) of Winter Springs, Florida. Richard was blessed with four granddaughters: Rebecca (Justin), Jessica (Tyler), Anna, and Lauren (Dayton). Richard was further blessed with three step granddaughters: Denelle (Nate), Jolynn (Rahkeem), and Jensen (Leo). Richard was a proud great-grandfather of three boys: Jason, Austin, and Sean and was also a beloved great-grandfather to three girls: Presley, Julianna, and Raina.
Richard enjoyed weightlifting, golf, racquetball, and tennis. Richard loved playing guitar, and he wrote, recorded, and held copyrights for fifteen of his own songs. Richard was quite fond of science fiction and was fascinated with our solar system and with space travel. Richard was a generous and kind soul who enjoyed the presence of others and put those around him at ease with his affable demeanor.
