Elizabeth Anne Hairston, Anne to most, Granny Anne to the most advantaged, passed away early Friday morning, August 25, 2023. Faithfulness and kindness defined her life. She was a faithful wife to her deceased husband of almost sixty-five years, a loving mother to her five sons, the kindest grandmother to her twelve grandchildren, and a doting presence in the life of her twenty-one great-grandchildren. Her brother (Billy) and sisters (Mary, Cookie, and Audrey) relied on her calming presence. She was a rock in their lives. Her many friends are old friends, no matter their age. The Southern Cotton Ginners Association was blessed with her service for over forty years. The Memphis area was her home, where she attended Bible Study Fellowship, Community Bible Study, and Grace Bible Church for decades. She leaves a legacy of faithful study and prayer.
She was a singer in her church choir every Christmas and Easter. She was a voracious reader, a quality she passed down to the next three generations. She traveled broadly, experiencing the glory of creation and the ingenuity of the American people. While she enjoyed travel, her favorite thing to do at any destination was to visit her loved ones.
As she enters the arms of Jesus, she bereaves all those on this side of the veil and celebrates her new body with her beloved Pops, her deceased son, Phillip and her deceased grandchildren, Adam and Jessica. She will be desperately missed by all. A quote she recited only days before she passed sums up the wisdom she frequently entrusted to others: “Sometimes life is so hard you can only do the next thing. Whatever that is, just do the next thing. God will meet you there.” -Elizabeth Elliot
