Elinor Shaw “Babe” Johnston passed peacefully in her sleep October 12th, 2015 while residing at Wyndham Lakes, a Brookdale Community in Jacksonville, Florida. She died of Alzheimer’s disease. Babe was born in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. in 1928 and was a graduate of Presbyterian College in Clinton S.C. She was married to Ronald Emmett Johnston, also a graduate of Presbyterian College, who passed away in 1977. She and her family lived in Atlanta, Ga. from 1958-1970. They belonged to Lakeside Country Club where she pursued her love for golf and tennis. She loved the social activities including bridge. Babe was always the “life of the party” and no one loved a good time more than her. Later in her life, she told us that, “I did it all”, which was a testament to her love of people. She was a loving mother and wife, and was strong, determined, and talented. She was a loyal friend to those she knew. In 1970, the family moved to Memphis, Tenn. While in Memphis, Babe was a member of Colonial Country Club. After Ronnie’s death, she moved to Panama City Beach, Fla. where she received her Master’s degree from FSU. She went on to teach at Mosely High School until retirement. She moved to Wyndham Lakes in Jacksonville, Fla., in 2010. She is survived by her daughter, Shaw Johnston Lane of St. Augustine, Fla., Ronald Emmett Johnston Jr. of Marietta, Ga., and Kirby Drummond Johnston of Mooreville, Miss.; her grandchildren, Drew Robertson, Gabe Mills, Kirsha Dudenhausen, Laurie Howerton, and Clay Johnston; and her ten great-grandchildren. She will be buried beside Ronnie on Saturday, Oct. 17th at Memorial Park in Memphis, Tenn.
