

George Smith Ettinger, 47, of Memphis, Tennessee, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, June 3, 2014. He is survived by his husband, Gregory Hadsall, his mother, Theresa Westbrook Ettinger, brothers Charles Ettinger, Andrew Ettinger and Jody Murphy; and sisters Laura Ettinger and D.E.B. Forbes. He leaves behind nieces Carr Leigh, Andi, Emily and Savannah; and nephews Christopher, Parker and Kiefer, as well as many cherished friends. He was preceded in death by his father, George William Ettinger, nephew Benjamin and niece Meghan.
Born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, George was a graduate of Overton High School in Memphis. Careers included stints in retail management, cosmetology and insurance. An avid and talented gardener, he spent many hours lovingly tending the gardens around his home and restoring the 100-year-old home where he lived with his husband. He was enormously creative, with wide-ranging interests that included reading, quilting, antiquing and cooking. George and his husband were members of the First Congregational Church.
George was active in the GLBT community, serving as president of the Mid-South Pride Parade and Festival committee for 5 years. He was a loyal friend and beloved son and brother. He had an infectious smile, a ringing laugh, and was fiercely protective of those he loved and devoted to his family.
Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, June 7 at the Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Avenue, from 5 to 7 pm. The memorial service will be at the Memphis Botanic Garden on 750 Cherry Road on Sunday, June 8 at 2pm. Flowers may be sent to the funeral home.
