John R. Barnes, 96, of Memphis, passed away July 11, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital. He was a longtime member of Mullins United Methodist Church for 56 years, and was retired as a manager for the Chrysler Corporation. Having served in WWII as an Army Major in the Pacific, he was one from “The Greatest Generation.” A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he was a hero, both in the Army, and at home. He was a blessing to all who loved and respected him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dot Barnes; a brother, Walter Barnes; and his mother, Pauline Barnes. Survivors include one son, Bill (Sherrie) Barnes of Memphis; two grandchildren, Phillip (Tara) Barnes and their daughter, Hadley, of Memphis, and Lindsey (Justin) Barnes Raby of Knoxville; and one nephew Dr. Jim (Suzanne) Barnes of Jackson, TN. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, Poplar Avenue, followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, also at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Memorial Park.
