He was born on June 1, 1944, in Sherman, Mississippi, to the late Roy and Willie Carter.
John was an avid hunter and outdoorsman who found great joy in spending time in nature. A devoted family man, he especially loved gathering everyone together for his famous fish fries. He had a sweet tooth, enjoyed trying new foods, and was known as a master craftsman whose skills and handiwork will be cherished for years to come.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Carter of 63 years; his daughter, Kelli Copeland (Joey); his grandchildren, Denise Jovel Umberger (Ever), Tiffany Umberger, and Trisha Umberger (Tim Hopper); 11 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Helen Putt, Libby Whitten, and Emily Littlejohn.
Family will receive friends from 1:00pm to 2:00pm on Tuesday, February 17 at Family Funeral Care 4925 Summer Ave, Memphis, TN. Services will follow at 2:00pm. Interment will be at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Rd, Bartlett, TN.
