John Turner Grills, age 71, of Germantown, Tennessee, passed away peacefully Friday, January 28, 2022, at Methodist Germantown Hospital, surrounded by his wife and daughters. He died from complications of congestive heart failure, renal failure, and Covid.
John was the third of seven children born to Richard B. Grills and Earlene (Sue) West Grills in Memphis, Tennessee on July, 19, 1950.
He attended elementary school at St. Ann Highland and graduated from Catholic High School in 1969. He received his Associate’s degree in computer science from State Tech Community College. John enjoyed a successful career as a Project Planner for FedEx before his retirement.
John was a wonderful son, husband, dad, Pop, father-in-law, son-in-law, and friend. He was kind, generous, and loved time spent with family.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Crosby Grills; three daughters, Bridget Carpenter, Erin Haguewood (Alan), Lindsay Black (Brad); four grandsons, Cody and Johnathan Carpenter and Gavin and Bryant Black; three bonus grandchildren, Elias, Jonas, and Nora Haguewood; two great-granddaughters, Evie and Ella Carpenter; and his mother-in-law, Minnie E. Carter. He is survived by two sisters, Susan Brito (Lawrence) and Kathy Poppenheimer; and three brothers, Richard (Rick) Grills, Gary Grills, and Ben Grills; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
John was predeceased by his parents and brother, Kevin Grills, and his father-in-law, Donald Carter.
Memorial donations may be made to the Children’s Heart Foundation/American Heart Association (childrensheartfoundation.org) or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
The family will receive friends at a visitation held Friday, February 4, 2022 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN 38119. Following the visitation will be a graveside service will be held at 12:00 PM at Memorial Park Cemetery.
