

He grew up in Dyersburg, TN where he played center for Dyersburg High School and reached the rank of Eagle Scout. He Graduated from Ole Miss where he was a cheerleader, a Sigma Nu, and met the love of his life, Judy Hooker. They married in 1964 and had a daughter, Kathy, before starting their life in Memphis, TN and welcoming a son, John IV, in 1969. They moved to Germantown, TN in 1985 where they lived until her passing 3 months ago.
He worked his whole life in investment banking. He loved the Ole Miss Rebels, duck hunting, and in later life got hooked on pickleball. He treasured his memories of Thanksgiving back in Dyersburg with family, trips to Gatlinburg, canoeing and the horse races at Oaklawn in Hot Springs. He loved entertaining friends and family indoors and out by the pool but mostly he treasured his family.
He was a loyal member of Wesleyan Hills UMC for 42 years. He enjoyed cooking steak dinners monthly for United Methodist men and organizing the church fundraiser of selling Pronto Pups at the Liberty Bowl Stadium for 8 years. He also loved having everyone over for chili after Christmas caroling. For the last 15 years, he has cherished his time at Covenant UMC and enjoyed fun, fellowship and pickleball.
He is survived by his children Kathy and John, IV; sister, Katherine Evans; brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Pam Guttery; sister-in-law, Lynda Hughey, brother-in-law, Benton; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews.
A “Celebration of Life” will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at Covenant United Methodist Church at 8350 Walnut Grove Rd. Cordova, TN 38018. Visitation will be at 1:00, services at 2:00 and a reception following the services. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to Covenant UMC or St. Jude.
