JOSEPH EDWARD GOODMAN, born August 23, 1983, was a brilliant media theorist with a seductive smile and a consummate wit. After graduating from Lewis and Clarke College in Portland, Oregon, he obtained his masters degree in sociology from the New School for Social Research and drew from diverse source material including Walter Benjamin, Roger Zelazny, Jean Baudrillard, and George R.R. Martin. His mental acuity was matched by his masterful skill at billiards, a game he avidly pursued in pool halls across the United States. The humor he brought to every social situation kept you on your toes. In the course of an evening, and in the presence of Joe, you might begin to question the fundamental principles upon which your life was based. Then again, he could warm your heart like nobody else. Joseph will be missed deeply by his family and friends. His mother, father and brother will never be able to fill the emptiness his parting has left in their hearts. Joseph was the beloved son of Ralph C. Goodman and Susan C. Goodman; brother to David; grandson of Loy and Betty Cates and Lillian Goodman; stepson of Sarah Goodman; nephew of Mike, Angie, Dennis, Mark, Laura, Arthur, Douglas; cousin of Nora, Candace, Chris, Brooke, Sarah, Justin and Taylor. The family will receive friends and guests on Friday, February 3 from 2 p.m., until a memorial service begins at 3 p.m., all at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 5599 Poplar Avenue. Any memorials may be sent to the donor’s local humane society.
