Larry P. Chambers, age 82, of Bartlett, Tennessee passed away on Monday, May 30, 2022. Larry was born in Memphis, TN on June 24, 1939. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Paul and Thelma Fuqua Chambers.
Larry graduated from Treadwell High School in 1957 and went on to complete college. He served with the Air National Guard of TN and US Air Force Reserve until he was honorably discharged in 1967.
He retired after 33 years from Schering Plough, Inc. He began working in the mailroom in his youth and worked his way up to Purchasing Manager. His brother remembers very fondly and vividly the loving care he showed to their parents. For example, when his parents bought their family’s first vehicle, Larry contributed the earnings from his paper route to help pay for it. This devotion to family carried over to his wife and daughter. He was a longtime, active member of Leawood Baptist Church, having joined in February of 1982. Larry had a lifelong passion for cars. He restored a 1956 Chevy Nomad Wagon, which he drove all across America, and was a founding member of the Memphis Classic Chevy Club. He was also actively involved in Shelby County Street Rodders. Larry had many longtime friends from his early days spent drag racing at Lakeland. He also drag raced at other venues including the NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis.
He leaves a legacy of love to his wife, Shirley Anne Barry Chambers of Bartlett, TN; his daughter, Angela Meredith Leigh (Bob) Criswell of Frankfort, KY; his brother, David (Marilyn) Chambers of Cordova, TN and his grandson, Rob Criswell of Morehead, KY.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer, American Cancer Society, or Leawood Baptist Church (Campus at Homer and Macon).
A visitation for Larry will be held Friday, June 3, 2022 from 10:00 AM until 12 Noon followed by his Celebration of Life Service at Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Ave, Memphis, TN 38122. The interment will be held at Memorial Park, 5668 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN 38120.
