

Born on September 22, 1918, Luther was a resident of Germantown, Tennessee, prior to moving to Kirby Pines Retirement Community. Following his service in the Army during World War II, he worked in the food industry as a grocer and cafeteria manager. Luther was a faithful member of the White Station Church of Christ, serving as an elder and Bible school teacher.
He was the devoted husband of Mary Lou Van Dyke Welch for 66 years, lovingly caring for her in her later years prior to her death. Luther was the father of a son, Jimmie Welch, and a daughter, Carolyn Welch Hladky. He had 5 grandchildren; Michael Welch, Bill Welch, Joseph Welch, Cherin Welch Waits, and Holly Hladky Pruitt as well as 9 great grandchildren; Jacob Welch, Nathan Welch, William Welch, Alexandra Welch, Ross Welch, Bret Waits, Shelby Waits, Madison Pruitt and Savannah Pruitt.
Luther was an avid golfer and hunter and was a lifelong fan of the University of Memphis Tigers basketball team. He loved gardening and sharing the bounty of his labors with his friends and family. He was a past recipient of the Esprit de Corp service award given by Harding Academy and leaves a legacy of generosity and service to others that will be long remembered and cherished.
Funeral services will be held at the Memphis Funeral Home at 5599 Poplar Ave., in Memphis on Friday August 4th, at 2:00 PM. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 2:00 PM prior to the service at Memphis Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Harding School of Theology.
