Niki Metaxas Gikas, 75, passed away peacefully at home after a long illness on Saturday, August 24, 2024. She was preceded in death by her younger sister Helen, her mother Frances, her younger brother, George and her twin sister Marcy.
Left to honor her memory are her husband Basile (Bill) of 57 years, her daughter Magda (Reed) Dvorak, adored grandson Andrew, and daughter Joanne Gikas. Though she often wished for more grandchildren, in recent years she overcame her fear of animals and welcomed her three grand dogs. She also leaves her last sibling, Steve (Kelly) Metaxas and a host of nieces, nephews and friends to mourn her loss.
Niki, a long-time hairstylist, was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, raised in Houston, Texas and lived all her adult life in Memphis. She was a good Southern woman in her kindness, demeanor and especially when it came to Southern cuisine. Niki was a quiet force, not one for many words, but when needed, she spoke frankly and concisely.
She was a faithful member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on Highland. She was also a member of the Elpis Philoptochos ladies organization and a dedicated volunteer at the annual Greek Festival. Her Greek roots were equally important to her as she enjoyed spending many beautiful summers on Skopelos Island, Greece creating memories of joy and laughter with her family. She will be forever missed.
Visitation will be Friday, August 30th at 10:00 am – 11:00 am at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church at 573 N Highland. The funeral will begin at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Memphis, TN.
