Tom served his country in the Unites States Army as a dental technician assigned to the 295th Medical Detachment during WWII. His tour of duty in Europe began with his landing on the beaches of Normandy D-Day + 2 and included the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium and the liberation of Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany. After his honorable discharge he married Geraldine Schmitt in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI on May 11, 1946.
Thomas retired from Chrysler Corporation as an accountant after 30 years. This is when Tom and Gerry started the “traveling” leg of their journey; visiting places in Europe where Tom had served and “cruising the Caribbean”.
Service to others came naturally to Tom, for many years he delivered Meals on Wheels throughout Memphis. He was also an usher and greeter at Holy Rosary Catholic Church at the 7:30 Sunday Mass, where he was a communicant for the past 50 years.
Tom never met a stranger or found a job he wouldn’t tackle- whether it was on the roof, under the house, or at a neighbor’s. Physics was the answer to most problems according to Tom and his idea of the end to a perfect day was a Manhattan and a pipe full.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife after 66 years of marriage. He leaves his children, Tom III (Becky) of Watauga, TX, Barbara Towne (Phil) of Olive Branch, MS and Peggy Killett (Wes Parker) of Cordova, TN.
The joys of his life included his 9 grandchildren, Shane, Brette, Ashleigh, Erica, Matt, Lyndsay, Ryan, Adrienne, and Kristin and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Monday, December 7, 2015 from 5-7 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel.
