of
Wilbert Jones Jr.
“In the Beginning”
Wilbert Jones Jr. was born on April 24, 1958, to the late Wilbert Jones Sr. and the late Charity Maude Cobb, in Saint Louis, Missouri. Wilbert grew up in Brownsville, Tennessee where he learned the value of close family relationships, cooperation and pride in his home, his church, and his community.
At an early age, Wilbert accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and joined the Farmers Chapel CME Church of Brownsville, Tennessee. He later joined Gray’s Creek Church of Arlington, Tennessee under the leadership of Pastor Patrick D. Tucker.
Wilbert graduated from Haywood High School in 1976. He played high school football from 1973-1975. After completing high school, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville awarded him a scholarship to play football. As a football player for the university, he played the positions of Quarterback and Defensive Back #7. He was a part of All Big Ten in 1975 and All State in 1975. He was also ranked 3rd in the state of Tennessee, scoring 62 points in 1975. He was an All-American player in 1975 and the #1 football prospect in the state of Tennessee. Wilbert was awarded Varsity Letters in Football for 1978-1980 and was honored for his outstanding leadership and contributions.

A believer in service to his community through his profession, Wilbert worked in the automotive industry for over 30 years. He retired from Lexus of Memphis in 2020.
Wilbert loved to travel and has been to various places throughout the United States and abroad. He truly loved people. He would often host cookouts for his family and friends, and he specialized in grilling steaks, as well as other meats. He would invite everyone over to enjoy his special recipes and always served others with a smile.
On Tuesday, July 5, 2022, the Lord chose to pick a beautiful flower for His wonderful Heavenly bouquet at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.

Wilbert Jones was preceded in death by his mother, father and his sister-in-law, Albertine Cobb. He is survived by his loving wife, Debra Jones; one sister, Mary Moffett (Frankie) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; one sister-in-law, Sharon Bolton (Kennie) of Memphis, Tennessee; one brother, William Cobb of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; one son, Corey King of Saint Louis, Missouri; five daughters, April Jones of Knoxville, Tennessee; LaToya Nash (Ryan), Erica Hurd (Kahari), Xiamara Oigbokie (Frank) of Memphis, Tennessee; BriSanel Whisnant-Jones of Nashville, Tennessee; 12 grandchildren, a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A visitation for Wilbert will be held Saturday, July 16, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Gray's Creek Baptist Church, 3141 Inglewood Place, Arlington, TN 38002. A funeral will occur Saturday, July 16, 2022 at 1:00 PM, Gray's Creek Baptist Church, 3141 Inglewood Place, Arlington, TN 38002. A burial will occur Saturday, July 16, 2022 at Gray's Creek Cemetery, Arlington, TN 38002.
