Rick was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-‐grandfather, adored his family and took great joy in watching his grandchildren and great-‐grandchildren excel in sports and hobbies. He found immense pleasure in coaching, metal detecting and dabbled in ham radio. He loved to take his family on vacations using the infamous tent trailer. He loved to joke around a lot and always said never lose your sense of humor. He also never gave up the opportunity to dance with his beloved wife, “Beach”.
Rick proudly served in the US Army as a Morse Code Operator in Germany where he and his wife shared many fond memories together, including welcoming their first born child while stationed there. They both enjoyed traveling while overseas when they had the opportunity.
After serving in the Army, Rick accepted a job in 1959 as a financial analyst in Defense Electronics with Rockwell International (now Boeing) where he remained until he retired. Rick was a graduate of Allegany High School in Cumberland, Maryland.
In his leisure time, Rick could be found on the ballfield where he coached softball of all ages for well over 30 years and made lifelong friendships which he cherished. Rick also had an immense love and passion for metal detecting. He was involved with several clubs and was recently nominated as a lifelong member into Riverside Treasure Hunters Club. He also helped establish a club in Charleston, SC where his youngest daughter lives and he and his wife visited often. Rick’s treasure hunting clubs also offered free assistance for the police departments, cities or whoever reached out to them that needed help finding all sorts of items. The groundwork and knowledge he has acquired over the years has inspired many people, including his family, to continue this sport.
Rick was a member of St. Francis of Rome Catholic Church where he found solace and community.
Rick recently lost the love of his life of 70 years and they are now together again. He is survived by his children; James R. Schramm, Jr., Elizabeth Mullins, Paulette Simmons and Susan Snyder. Rick also leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 10 great-‐grandchildren.
