Bill Currier passed away peacefully on December 19th.
Born to Juanita Currier, née Poe, and William F. Currier Sr. in Tucson, AZ. Bill grew up in a Railroad family. Following in the footsteps of both his Grandfather and Father, spending his childhood moving from one Railroad terminal to another, from Gila Bend, AZ, Truckee, CA, Calipatria, CA and last to the Los Angeles, CA area where he began his career as a Brakeman. He then joined the Marine Corps serving four years during the end of the Korean war.
When returning home he returned to being a Brakeman while attending Cal-Poly, Pomona, CA earning his Bachelor’s Degree. He was then recruited to Railroad Officer Training and promoted to an officer’s positions in Gila Bend, AZ, San Jose, CA, Salinas, CA, Klamath Falls, OR & Portland, OR.
His Railroad management career included the Eugene, OR Terminal where he met Terry Hatton who also had a Railroad career. They realized an affinity for both railroading and each other. They were married in Eugene in 1979 and spent the subsequent years moving around the railroad system, including Portland, OR., San Francisco, CA. & Long Beach, CA. Bill was best known for his management style. He always listened to people, being level-headed, fair and always bringing out the best in whomever he worked with.
Bill retired from Southern Pacific in 1992. He then became Director of Operations for the start-up of the Metrolink Commuter Rail System in Los Angeles from 1992 to1997, and then retiring again and moving to Omaha, NE., following Terry during the merger of the Southern Pacific & Union Pacific Railroads. Bill then consulted with different railroads from Australia to the East Coast of the US until Terry retired in 2001, and made their final move to Menifee in Southern California where they have lived ever since.
Bill spent his retirement volunteering in many areas, he became President of a local Hospice, serving on his community HOA for 3 different terms and researching several environmental issues.
When Bill wasn’t working or volunteering, he loved to cook trying new recipes. He spent hours on his bicycle, training and participating in Cycle Oregon, a 500-mile, week-long bike ride as well as traveling with Terry and gardening.
Bill is survived by his wife, Theresa (Terry) Currier (Hatton), step-daughter, Marcella (Marci) Solander. Daughter Mary Lisa, Sisters Kathleen Ouellet and Cynthia Currier. Daughter Susan and Brother’s Don & Rick preceded him in death.
Bills Celebration of Life will be held on March 15, 2025, which would have been his 90th birthday, at their community clubhouse in Menifee, CA. If you wish to attend, please notify Terry via email at [email protected] or call/text her at 951-741-5987.
