Barbara J. Williams was born on January 23, 1934, in Bienville, Louisiana and passed away on October 23, 2021 at the age of 87. She was married to Lt. Col. Donald C. Williams (USAF Retired) for 54 years until his death in 2011. They lived in Atwater while stationed at Castle Air Force Base from 1964 to 1973. Upon Don’s retirement in 1981, they settled in Merced.
Barbara embraced being a military wife and was a lifelong patriot. She was included in the 1966 edition of “Outstanding Young Women of America” in tribute for her many civic and on-base activities. As a woman of integrity, she continued her dedication to service with numerous organizations including the National Federation of Republican Women, the Emblem Club, and Officers Wives Clubs (at various bases prior to settling in Merced).
One of her proudest accomplishments was being an integral part of Castle Air Museum and their continued success. Barbara served on the Board and tirelessly chaired many fundraisers, membership events, and was the consummate volunteer and advocate for the Museum.
Once her boys left the nest, Barbara enjoyed 25 years in the travel business concentrating on small groups. She travelled the world, delighting in sharing her knowledge and passion of exploration with her clients.
Barbara loved to sew, cook and bake. From full course dinners to backyard barbecues and holiday feasts, no one left her house hungry or empty-handed. She was the queen of her kitchen and expressed love and appreciation through her cooking. A few of her specialties were generous servings of pies, rolls, banana pudding and cakes, which were enjoyed by all.
Barbara is survived by her two sons, Don II and wife Debra, Dwight and wife Mary; four grandchildren: Chris Rios and wife Sherry, Clayton Williams, Allison Peffley and husband Joshua, and Lauren Segal and husband Jordan; and two great-grandchildren Grace and Noah Peffley.
