

Danny Barnes was born on October 21, 1934 in Prentiss, Mississippi to Dan and Oatis Barnes. He was the oldest of five siblings. After moving to California, he lived in Oakland with his mother and 2 oldest sisters.
In 1946, the family settled in Merced, California. Danny attended Galen Clark Elementary School and Merced High School. He played sports at both Galen Clark and Merced High School.
On August 1, 1955 he married Lucille Woods. To this union five children were born: Charles, John, Daniel, Denise and Diane.
He was employed with the City of Merced as a sanitation worker beginning in 1958. He became a supervisor in 1973 and retired from the City in December of 1992.
Danny or “Frog” as some knew him was an avid sports fan. He coached boys’ basketball, Little Miss Softball, women’s slow-pitch and for 36 years coached men’s slow-pitch softball teams. He enjoyed watching his favorite sports teams – the LA Dodger and the San Diego Chargers play on television. He was a constant fixture at Merced High football games, Merced College women’s basketball games, and Joe Herb Park during softball season.
He was preceded in death by his father Dan, mother Oatis, and son John.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lucille; his sons – Charles of Merced, Daniel (Deneva)of Fresno; his daughters – Denise(Michael) of Sacramento and Diane (Fred) of Sacramento; sisters Aricell Washington, Elouise (George) Brice, Mary Barnes, and Essettia Barnes; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and family members. A visitation will be held on Friday October 3rd 2014 from 3:00- 7:00 P.M. at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home 1490 B Street Merced CA, 95341.Services to be held on, October 4, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Apostolic Tabernacle, 2745 East State Highway 140 Merced, and CA 95340.
