Dunlap departed this life on April
30, 2017 in Merced, California at
the age of 104. She was born
on May 15, 1912 to Walter
Dallas Ledford and Martha
Rebecca Callison near Cypress,
California. She was the ninth
of their twelve children, all of
whom preceded her in death. She
was married to James Francis
Stafford on March 12, 1932 in
Long Beach, California. They
had two children, Helen Marie,
born July 5, 1935 and Thomas
James, born November 9, 1936.
After the death of her first
husband on October 30, 1942,
she married Harold Newhouse
Dunlap on February 29, 1948
in Los Angeles, California. They
had one daughter, Margaret
Kandis, born December 8, 1949
who died 19 months later on
August 1, 1951.
After graduation from Anaheim
High School in 1930, Doris
attended beautician school and
operated her own beauty shop
for several years. During World
War II, she worked for Lockheed
Aircraft in Burbank, Californian,
and was a “Rosie the Riveter”
helping to manufacture military
airplanes, B17’s and P38’s, for
the war effort. She and her
second husband operated two
family dairies in Merced County,
California, and later, a beef cattle
operation in Tehema County,
California. They first operated
Table Mountain Ranch near Red
Bluff, ran cattle in the mountains
west of the town of Mount Shasta,
and later owned and operated a
smaller ranch north of Red Bluff.
She was well acquainted with
hard work, riding many miles on
horseback, working cattle and
providing ranch-style meals to
those who came to visit or help
work cattle. She also drove a
school bus on a rural route.

and numerous nieces, nephews
and their offspring.
She received excellent care in
her later years in the home of
her daughter Helen Mayo and
husband Harvey, when she could
no longer live independently.
Helen and Harvey preceded
her in death. They were aided
by numerous family members
including Jordan Daniels,
Rochelle Dunn, Edith Daniels
and Evelyn Mayo. A dear family
friend and caregiver, Serena
Cooper, provided exceptional care
and expressed her love to Doris
in countless ways. The fact that
Doris lived as long as she did and
enjoyed a good quality of life in
those later years, is largely due to
the wonderful care she received
in the Mayo home.
Her family, many of whom
affectionately have known her
as “Grams”, was very important
to her, and she will be fondly
remembered and very much
missed by them.
Funeral arrangement will
be handled by Stratford
Evans Merced Funeral Home,
and interment will be held at
Plainsburg Cemetery, 8943
Gillette Road, Le Grand,
California. A Celebration of
Life service will be held at 1:00
p.m. on Friday, May 5, 2017 at

received in her later years by
