Dear Family and Friends. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Elmer (Jake) Thomas Jacobsen, a cherished husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather who departed this life peacefully on January 25, 2025. Surrounded by his beloved family in their home in Merced, California, he reached the age of 88 years. Elmer was born on September 27, 1936, in Solvang, California to Alfred Jacobsen and Gudrun (Goodie) Kristensen Jacobsen. He fondly recalled his formative years spent in the picturesque landscapes of Solvang. Following his graduation with a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University and serving honorably in the Army stationed in Okinawa, he returned to contribute to the family farm. He eventually relocated to Merced, California with his growing family, allowed him to continue this fulfilling pursuit of agriculture throughout his life. His passions extended beyond farming; Elmer enjoyed houseboating on Lake McClure and cherished moments spent with those he loved most. He is survived by Judy Jacobsen (Womack), his devoted wife of 62 years; sons Steve (and Lynn) from Agoura Hills and Mike (and Teresa) from Atwater; daughter Karen Hansen (and Steve) from Catheys Valley—who along with Judy provided unwavering care during Elmer's later years—and beloved sibling Ralph (and Joanne) from Salinas. His legacy continues through six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren whom he inspired to value education as a cornerstone for future success. Elmer’s remarkable generosity and selflessness left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. While we mourn this significant loss deeply within our hearts, we will also celebrate his enduring legacy characterized by kindness and devotion.
A memorial service honoring Elmer's life will take place at Stratford Evans Funeral Home located at 1490 B Street in Merced at 11:00 AM on February 25, 2025.
