John Kammerer, age 87, was born in Brooklyn, New York, son of Charles and Mathilda Kammerer; brother to Charlie and Ken. A graduate from Public School 54 in Brooklyn, New York, he was inducted into the US Army Air Corp February 5, 1943 and served his country until 1964, entering the military as a private and retiring as a Major. He graduated from Florida State University in 1964 with a B.S. in Industrial Arts with a Minor in Social Studies. He married Doris J. Crim in August of 1945 in Pueblo, Colorado and subsequently had three children, Marlene, Brad, and Brian.
John made the Air Force his career and was a Bombardier flying B-24’s, Radar Navigator on B-29’s, B-50’s, B-47’s, and B-52’s. His military service took him many places, including: England, Spain, Italy, Panama, North Africa, and Greenland.
After retirement, he received his Master’s Degree and began his second career teaching Industrial Arts courses at Atwater High School. Retirement included traveling in his RV with long time Air Force friends and the Rolling Amigos Trailer Club. He was a 50 Year Mason, member of Lodge # 214 in Limestone, Maine, a State Representative to the California Teachers Association, a member of the National Sojourners, Yosemite Chapter #520. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Merced School Employee Federal Credit Union. The highlight of his retirement was spending time with his grandchildren
He is survived by his wife of 65 years Doris Kammerer, daughter Marlene Wilson-Marchi and her husband Robert Marchi, sons, Brad and Brian Kammerer, daughter in law, Meg Kirby Kammerer, grandson Jeff Kammerer, granddaughter Jennifer Wilson Leeper and husband Tom Leeper, step granddaughters, Jodi Marchi Kessler and husband Scott Kessler, Stephanie Marchi Hampton husband Matt Hampton.
A Memorial Service will be held at The Elks Lodge, 1910 M Street Merced, CA 95340 on Saturday March 12th, 2011 at 1:00 P.M.
Private Services will be held at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.Donations may be made to the SPCA of Merced.
