On October 22 our beloved Aunt Margy, age 93, passed away peacefully in her home in Merced surrounded by her nieces and nephews who adored her. Born in Streator, Illinois, to her parents Lee D. Condon and Marguerite Sullivan Condon, Marguerite lived surrounded by Sullivan grandparents, uncles, and cousins who settled in the area from Ireland in 1700s. She and her sisters MaryLee (O’Connor), Saranne (Morse), and Colleen (Brosnan) lived adventuresome lives entering the world that beckoned to each of them. Their Irish Heritage remained a large influence in their lives over the years.
Marguerite attended Loyola University, in Chicago Illinois upon graduation from Streator Township High School. In 1945 she joined her sister Saranne, who was attending the University of Southern California. Marguerite worked at the NBC Studios until she moved to Chicago in 1959 to work for United Airlines where she met the love of her life, Allan James Carey. They were married on Marguerite’s Birthday on October 1, 1966. United Airlines moved Allan and Marguerite from city to city. Marguerite’s extensive knowledge of geography, culture, art, and music provided her many opportunities for employment in the travel industry in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and Cleveland, Ohio. As an Independent Trip Director, she conducted international tours to Europe, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, the Phillipines, and many cruises. Upon Allan’s retirement in 1985, Marguerite once again joined her sister Saranne and brother-in-law Larry Morse in Merced, California where she happily worked at Merced Travel for many years. Marguerite lost her husband Allan, a World War II veteran and D-Day bomber pilot, in 2002.
Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband, Allan James Carey, parents Lee and Marguerite Condon, and sisters MaryLee O’Connor of Chicago, Illinois, Saranne Morse of Merced, and Colleen Brosnan of Nyack, New York, nieces and nephews, M. Joseph and Colleen O’Connor, and Larry D. Morse, II. She is survived by many adoring nieces and nephews; from the O’Connor Clan: Kevin, Bridget, Molly, Dennis, Nora, Timothy, and Michael; from the Morse Clan: Brian, Neil, Anne, Emily and Ellen; and from the Brosnan Clan: JPat, Maire, Megan, and Maura. Marguerite had a gift of remembering important details, dates, and deep knowledge of each niece and nephew and made everyone she spoke to feel significantly loved. Her inquiring conversations, travel knowledge, and Democratic, liberal ideals will be sorely missed. She is the last of the sisters and of her generation to survive, and with her death an important chapter in our lives closes.
Her Funeral Service is scheduled for Friday, November 12, at 10:00 a.m. at the San Joaquin National Cemetery in Santa Nella, where she will join her beloved husband Allan James Carey.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.stratfordevansfunerals.com for the Carey family.
