January 31, 1954 — February 13, 2026
Michael James Cullen aka Gritts, a beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026, at the age of 72, after courageously battling complications with ALS. Born on January 31, 1954, in Merced, California, Michael was the cherished son of the late James B. Cullen and Doris B. Pregno. He was predeceased by his parents and now leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter for his surviving family members and friends.
Michael's life was marked by a profound passion for food, family, and friendship. He began his culinary journey in his hometown of Merced at The Cask N Cleaver, where he discovered his love for the restaurant industry. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to become the proud owner of Chiantis Ristorante at Bob Heart Square and Grinders, as well as a renowned local caterer. His culinary talents were matched only by his warm hospitality, making him the "go-to guy" for organizing and preparing meals, especially during the cherished gatherings with his high school friends, affectionately known as "The Bud's Bash."
In search of new adventures and opportunities, Michael relocated to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, over 30 years ago. There, he continued to enrich lives as a Restaurant Manager at Shooters and later as a Property Manager and Director of Housekeeping at The Golf Club at Black Rock. His dedication and integrity earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and friends alike.
Michael's personal life was a testament to his love for the simple joys. His annual vacations, often centered around food, fishing, and skiing, were highlights of his year. He adored cooking, barbecuing, and spending quality time with his family and friends. Michael's vibrant spirit and generous heart left an indelible mark on everyone he met, creating special moments that will be cherished forever.
He is survived by his devoted brother, John B. Cullen (Gayle), and loving sister, Maryellen C. Mazzei (David). His legacy of love continues through his niece Kelley Cullen, niece Monique Mazzei Santos (Jason), nephew Kevin Cullen (Heidi), and his great-niece and nephew, Molly and Connor Cullen.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Terrie's TLC, especially Terrie, Rosa, and Hope, and to Bristol Hospice, for their compassionate care and support during Michael's final days.
A celebration of Michael's life will be held on May 24, 2026, at 1:00 PM at The Mazzei Home, located at 4054 Vaughn Ave, Merced, CA 95341. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to ALS and local Hospice organizations, in honor of Michael's enduring spirit and his battle against ALS.
Michael James Cullen leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship, and culinary delights that will forever be remembered by those fortunate enough to have known him. His life was a beautiful testament to the joy of living fully, loving deeply, and embracing each moment with open arms.
