

Barney L. Mitchum, Jr. of Merritt Island, Florida, age 79, entered into eternal rest on January 26, 2011. Barney was the first born son, of the late Barney L. Mitchum, Sr. and Nellie Veronica Mitchum. He was born in Charleston, S.C. and he resided in Merritt Island, Florida for the last forty-seven years.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, a former 1948-1949 Golden Gloves Champion of South Carolina. He was a proud graduate of the Citadel Military College of South Carolina, Class of 1959 and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Rollins College, Class of 1979.
He was a Charter member of the Knights of Columbus, Father McCarthy Council at Blessed Sacrament Church, Charleston, S.C. Barney was also a long time member of Divine Mercy Parrish, Merritt Island and the Barony Estates Home Owner's Association. Barney retired from NASA in 1994 as a Program Manager after thirty years of service.
Barney had a very generous wit and humor and was a very accomplished story teller.
Barney was preceded in death by his beloved son, Barney L. Mitchum III; sisters, Patricia Giles and Juanita M. Morgan; and brother, William (Billy) Mitchum. He is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Marlene (Molly) Maguire Mitchum; daughters, Karen Mitchum, daughter-in-law (Deborah E. Miller, MD) of Dayton, OH and Cynthia (Cindy) Mitchum of Orlando, FL; and son, Anthony (Tony) Mitchum of Cocoa, FL; brother, Lee Russell Mitchum of Jackson, GA; and one granddaughter, Rachel Hunzeker (Ben); and great-granddaughter, Rose E. Hunzeker of Tokyo, Japan; and brother-in-law, Michael (Mickey) Maguire (Lorraine) of Charleston, S.C.
There will be a viewing at 1:00 PM on Friday, January 28, 2011 at Divine Mercy Catholic Church Chapel followed by a mass of Christian burial at 2:00 PM also at Divine Mercy Catholic Church. Reception to follow, place to be announced.
