I met Dr. Everett Whitehead for the first time when I was enrolled in the Nova University Masters Program.   He was actually my favorite of all the teachers during that time.  He was a great teacher with a great sense of humor and made the class interesting and fun.   Several years later, I met his wife Mrs. Mildred Whitehead (Midge) who was my son Astric's Math teacher.  Midge and I became friends and she  reconnected me with her husband who I always referred to as Dr. Whitehead out of respect for him having been one of my teachers.  Over the last thirty years  I met many Whitehead family members and friends. 
Our families enjoyed each others friendship, and spent a lot of time together.   He was not only a good teacher, he was a great husband, a great father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.  He will be sorely missed.

There was no one else like Uncle Everett Whitehead (also known as Cedric and often called "Doc" by his son Richard, because he had a doctorate degree from when he went to college). 
A big fan of education, He always tried to encourage many, if not ALL of his nieces and nephews into investing their time into a good education, because he knew in the long term that their education would serve them well, no matter what area of life they decided to endeavor.   And I always remember him saying to me from time to time, "Darrell, you're a gentleman and a scholar".   Words of encouragement to keep me pressing forward in life.
 Uncle Everett and his sister Loretta for many years spearheaded our Whitehead family reunion, that we still celebrate on the first Sunday in August every year in Murray,  Iowa.  (The water balloon toss,  the egg toss, and the Friday night card games of Pitch  and "oh heck" won't be the same without your sense of humor leading the way!).   
  And we could always depend on not only good stories of generations past, but also encouraging words of wisdom and advice.  Uncle Ev was one of the best story teller's of our family and made going to the reunion every year so much fun.  He was an encourager for as long as I can remember.  I think that it's what I'll remember about him the most.  Even when he was having a not so fantastic day himself, and if it seemed to be one of your worst days, he would try to forget about his own problems and give you words of encouragement to keep and put you back on steady ground.   
Thanks for all the years of encouragement, Uncle Ev.  Your life was one well lived and the memories of your life will be cherished in our hearts for as long as we can hold them dear.   Until we meet again in heaven.  I know there will be lots more  colorful stories for you to tell us when we get there.  Give all your brothers and sisters and Grampa and Grandma a hug from all of us!  Love your nephew, Darrell Whitehead.

No one could tell a story  like Everett.   You were  never quite  sure if he made up some of the details to make it a better story but in the end it was always a great  story.   That was Everett a really great story. We’ll miss you, Cuz. 

I'm so sad to learn of Ev's death. I taught at the Melbourne campus. However, I sat through many  meetings with Ev at BCC. His insight was instrumental in many union activities and contracts. His wit was always a blessing in tense situations. I miss him. My sympathies to his family where I know he will be dearly missed as well.
