Born in Arkansas in 1944 Hal graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in Accounting and became an Armor Officer in the United States Army. After completing Ranger School he did three tours in Vietnam as a Tank Commander, then returned back home to become an instructor at the West Point Academy. During his time he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor Device (3rd Oak Leaf Cluster), the Army Commendation Medal with Valor Device, The Legion of Merit (1st Oak Leaf cluster) and various other decorations. He also advanced his education, earning two masters degrees and graduating from the US Army War College. His career in the military took him and his family across the world from Frankfurt, Germany to the Mojave Desert. He proudly retired in 1993 as a Colonel, having served his country for 26 years.
Reluctant to relax after retirement Hal settled in Florida where he worked for another decade as a consultant bidding military contracts. He was able to indulge in his lifelong hobbies, fishing, restoring classic Mustangs and rebuilding houses. Never one to sit still Hal always had a project or two at any given time, recruiting his family for some impromptu early morning construction work, often bellowing his signature phrase “We’re Burning Daylight!” He loved John Wayne movies, working hard and sneaking in a nap before dinner in his recliner after a job well done.
He is deeply missed by his wife of thirty years, Raelene; his five children, Scott, Sean, Jennifer, Suzanne and Tyler; his grandchildren Devan, Grant, Randi, Troy, Grace, Mattie, Lola, Logan, Ethan and Haylee and his great grandchild Kana. A memorial service with Military Honors will be held at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery on November 17, 2022.
