John Robert Newman, 64, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, January 4, 2015 in Cape Canaveral, Florida. He was born on March 29, 1950 to parents John Franklin Newman and Isabelle Dock Newman in Sunbury, PA. John is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 44 years Cesta Dagle Newman of Lake City, daughter Kirsty Newman Gomez of Orlando, daughter Holly Newman Derenthal of Orlando, son John C. Newman of Orlando, sister Connie Newman Heintzelman of Cary, NC, and his father John F. Newman of Cary, NC. John was preceded in death by his infant daughter Amy Newman. He also leaves behind two sons in law: Syd Gomez and Mike Derenthal, and four grandchildren, Rachael, Ryan, Anna & Sadie.
Since a young age John was a true entrepreneur, and discovered his love of radio broadcasting while attending Selinsgrove High School (class of ’68). John was the class president, a member of the radio club, and a star running back and member of the track team. After high school he would continue to play football and run track at Bucknell University, where he would also work as a DJ for the University’s radio station before graduating with a degree in electrical engineering in 1972. He and Cesta married in 1970 and shortly thereafter purchased their first radio station in Salamanca, New York. John, Cesta, and their three young children would then move to Florida in 1984. From that point forward John spent the last three plus decades developing community-focused radio stations in different markets in Florida and New York, ultimately settling in Lake City, Florida while enjoying part time residency in Cocoa Beach, Florida as well.
John knew Christ well, and constantly inspired others with his strong faith. He never met a stranger, always quick to get a friendly conversation going with just about anyone who might cross his path. John adored his family, and was a beloved father, husband, son, brother, grandfather and father-in-law. Known affectionately as “Pa” to his four grandchildren, John truly loved to make them laugh and watch them play, and was a regular visitor to their sports and activities.
His deep faith, love of family and adventuresome spirit will continue to inspire us. He will be missed.
