Mildred Lillian Buchanan was born, July 31, 1921 in Satsuma Heights, Florida to Samuel and Alice McDuffie and went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 30, 2013. Mildred was the eldest of three children. Preceding her in glory includes her husband Wilbur, her parents and her middle sister. We are certain they were there to welcome her home with open arms.
Mildred was a faithful member of Mt. Moriah A.M.E Church as a child and as a young lady. While living in Cocoa, Florida, she met the love of her life Wilbur Buchanan. They later married in Pasadena, California. Following their love of music, they moved to New York City where Wilbur played in various quartets and Mildred followed her dream at that time of becoming a tonsorial artist in her sister’s beauty salon. Mildred later gave birth to their first child Audrey.
Shortly after Audrey’s birth, they moved to Pacoima, California where they purchased their first home and had their two other children Marc and Judi. In Pacoima, Mildred and Wilbur opened their own beauty salon, where they both were able to work together as tonsorial artists. Although she owned her own shop, she worked for years at Hamburger Hamlet in Sherman Oaks, California. Years later, Mildred became active in the community by working with teens at the Pacoima Teen Post and eventually worked for the Los Angeles County Employment Development where she retired in 1984. In 1985, she moved back to Florida and resided in Merritt Island. She resumed her active status at Mt. Moriah A.M.E. Church and also joined the choir as she did as a child.
Oh how blessed is the promise
When our spirit is set free
To be absent from the body means
To live, O Lord with Thee.
